Minimal time, maximum benefit

We know you’re busy. That’s why Compass is designed so that your commitment is no more than what is typically expected of college students. Whether you’re an evening, weekend or traditional day student—or taking one class or three—an hour of your time each week can move you toward your goals!

Does this program cost anything?

Compass is completely free.

Will I earn any college credit for being in Compass?

No, because Compass is not a class. However, the program will give you tools you can use to succeed in the classes you ARE taking for credit. And because the Compass program is not a credit class, there is no pass or fail!

What if I do have some ideas about what I want to major in or do for a job, but I’m not totally sure?

Whether you have some ideas or no ideas, we can help you get the information you need to make the best decision for you! Our program will help you learn about your options, figure out what to do to get ready for your next step, and explore different career possibilities. You’ll get to take fun personality quizzes and do activities to help you think about this stuff.

How much time will I have to spend on this program?

Expect to spend an hour every week doing a Compass activity (more if you want to). This could be LOTS of different things, and you’ll have choices about what counts. You might go to a workshop to learn how to take notes in class, spend time looking through a career exploration website, chat online with a peer mentor, meet with an advisor to check in about your semester, or get together with a group of people to go to a campus event like a speaker or club fair. We’ll schedule things at lots of different times, so you’ll be able to pick activities that are helpful to you AND fit into your schedule.

How do I sign up?

All you need to do is send us an email at compass@gcc.mass.edu or fill out the email form on the Compass page below these FAQs. You can contact us even if you haven’t applied to GCC, we will be in touch with next steps.

What if I want to leave before I complete the program?

We want you to make a sincere commitment to the Compass program when you decide to join, and we hope that if something isn’t going well for you, you’ll talk to us about it so we can all work together to make this program useful for you. However, membership in this program is always voluntary. You can’t fail Compass even if you leave, and it doesn’t show up on your transcript.
