Fish Project

Greenfield Community College is involved in an ambitious migratory fish project at a number of different sites on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts. We are under contract with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the owners of the Holyoke Dam (Holyoke Gas and Electric Company) and the Turners Falls Dam and Cabot Station Hydroelectric Facility (Northeast Utilities) to mark, trap and count anadromous and catadromous fish on the Connecticut River. These fish include Atlantic Salmon, American Shad, Lamprey and Eel. The studies and work that we are involved in is essential to insuring the success of migratory fish passage and the revival of populations on the Connecticut River. For GCC students it represents a terrific opportunity for hands on and paid work experience in an exciting environmental program.
