Test-Taking Accommodations

Overview

Examples of test-taking accommodations for qualified students include receiving additional time, taking the test in a distraction-reduced or distraction-free setting (Greenfield Community College’s Testing Center), or provision of a reader. Test-taking accommodations must be part of your Accommodation Agreement, and there are specific steps you must follow in order to implement these accommodations.

Implementing Test-Taking Accommodations

How to Begin

Provide your professors with a copy of your Accommodation Agreement and arrange a time to speak with them about where you will be taking your tests (exams, tests and quizzes).

If you’re taking online classes, contact the Wellness Center (413-775-1332) to obtain an electronic copy of your Accommodation Agreement. The office administrative assistant will send you an email with the electronic copy attached, which you can then forward to your professors.

Test Location Options

A.  GCC’s Testing Center is commonly where students with testing accommodations take their tests.

Students taking evening, weekend, and online classes should review the Testing Center’s posted office hours to determine potential scheduling challenges.

Location:  1st floor, Main Campus Building (Core), office C110        Web:  gcc.mass.edu/testing

B.  Your professor may have a suitable space adjacent to their classroom or office where they can proctor your tests.

If after working with your professor and the Testing Center, you are unable to find an available space to take your tests, please contact the Coordinator of Disability Services for assistance.

C.  On-line class professors may allow students to take their tests off-campus. Prior to each test, you should remind your professor that you have an accommodation for extra time.  Your professor will adjust Moodle to increase the amount of time you’re allowed for the test.

Taking Your Tests in the Testing Center

1.  Talk with your professor about when you will need to take your test and how long the test will be. You will want to schedule your testing appointment so that you don’t miss class. To ensure fairness, your professor may require you to begin your test (in the Testing Center) at the same time as the rest of your classmates, or before, to accommodate extra time.  For your own planning purposes, figure out how much time you’ll be allowed for the test using the extra time accommodation in your Accommodation Agreement.

Make an appointment with the Testing Center in advance of EACH test to ensure that space is available. Request appointments at least 24 hours in advance during the Testing Center’s normal business hours.

2.  Remind your professor that you have testing accommodations at least (3) three school days in advance of EACH test. Your professor will need to provide the Testing Center with a copy of your test, as well as information about your testing accommodations. You do not need to provide the Testing Center with a copy of your Accommodation Agreement.

3.  Arrive on time on the day of the test. You may not be allowed to take your test in the Testing Center if you arrive late.

4.  If you need to reschedule your test, check with your professor to be sure the test can be made up and when (time frame).

Regardless of where you take your tests, you must remind your professor that you have testing accommodations at least three (3) school days before each test.
