Placement Testing

Most students are required to complete reading, writing, and mathematics assessments before registering for their first credit course. This assessment helps to ensure academic success by placing you in appropriate courses.

You may be exempt from skills assessment if:

  • You have already completed the assessment process at GCC;
  • You have already successfully completed a transferable course in English composition and/or mathematics at another college (math course must be within the last five years);
  • You are taking courses on an audit basis not for credit.

Students who believe that their assessment scores do not reflect their level of skill should contact the Testing Center 413-775-1147 to discuss their options and to arrange for a re-test.

Students whose skills assessment places them in ENG 090 or COL 090 should not enroll in college-level courses, except for those open to developmental English students. Some of these courses may require additional skills assessment placement testing.

For more information about these and other courses, please consult the GCC course catalog.
