Online classes in Eng and retention

A recent article [March 2010] from a conference on teaching composition suggests that when writing classes are taught online,  students learn to write  well if the size of class remains small and meets the composition class size requirements.  There is also evidence that students are retained in the course at same level as face to face class.  Other findings suggest that faculty who teach online and/or in hybrid settings require ongoing help desk and pedagogical professional development.
