Tuition waivers for Massachusetts veterans
Eligible Courses:
- Student must be enrolled in any state-supported course offered by a public college or
university working toward an undergraduate degree or enrolled in an eligible
certificate program that includes only undergraduate level courses.
Student Eligibility:
- Student must be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts for at least one year prior to registering for courses
prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
- Student may not be in default of any federal student loan, nor can the student owe a
refund for any previously awarded financial aid.
Categories of Veterans:
- World War I
- Between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918 OR
- A recipient of World War I Victory Medal
- Had been in the Massachusetts National Guard between March 25, 1917 and August 5, 1917
- World War II
- Between September 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946
- Korean War
- Between June 25, 1950 and January 31, 1955
- Vietnam
- Between August 2, 1964 and May 7, 1975 OR
- Had served at least 180 days active duty in the U. S. Armed Forces between February 1,
1955 and August 4, 1964 or between May 7, 1975 and June 4, 1976. If 180 days activity not
served, veteran must have received either a service related disability or Purple Heart,
under other than dishonorable conditions
- Lebanon
- Wartime service and recipient of campaign medal for service beginning August 25, 1982
until the president withdraws forces.
- Grenada
- Wartime service and recipient of campaign medal for service from October 25, 1983 to
December 15, 1983
- Panama
- Wartime service and recipient of campaign medal for service from December 20, 1989 to
January 31, 1990
- Persian Gulf
- Wartime service from August 2, 1990 until Executive Order and resolution of Congress
ends it. Student must also have received one of the following medals:
- Southwest Asia Medal
- National Defense Service Medal
- Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
- Armed Forces
- An active member of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, or Cost
Guard) stationed and residing in Massachusetts for one year prior to registration. This
program does not include Reservists and National Guardspersons.
Required Documentation for Tuition Waiver:
- DD 214 (Showing participation and service medal)
- Proof of one year Massachusetts residency (prior to start date of semester)
- Completion of the G.C.C. Tuition Waiver Certification form
