Banned Books Week has been going on for over 30 years! Wondering about who else is participating? Visit http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/.
Today, we have a poster from our registrar, Holly Fitzpatrick, reading The Glass Castle. This book, a best-seller when it was published, was challenged in schools in Michigan and Kansas last year. Although it was temporarily removed, in both cases it was returned to the classroom after protests from students and parents.
Our second poster shows Linda Horta, an administrative assistant, reading My Mom’s Having a Baby. This non-fiction children’s book describes the conception and birth process; the requests to ban the book cite age inappropriateness and explicit imagery as their reasons. It was the number 4 banned book in the US in 2011.
Banned books week will conclude next Tuesday, October 1st, with our speaker, Casey Murrow, discussing freedom of information and of the press related to the work of his father, Edward R. Murrow. Join us!
