Try using reference books to help refine a topic or gather general information about your topic. Some specific books to explore are:
- Europa World Yearbook: Ref. JN1 E85 2002
- Encyclopedia of Genocide: Ref. HV6322.7.E53 1999
- Encyclopedia of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity: Ref. HV6322.7.E532 2005
The GCC Library subscribes to several online research databases that contain information about articles published in periodicals (magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals, etc.). Sometimes you'll find the full text of the article, and sometimes just the citation (the author, title of the article, name of the periodical in which it was published, publication date, etc.).
Try searching the following databases to find recent articles related to Darfur and Sudan, genocide, and illuminated manuscripts:
- CQ Researcher - CQ Researcher offers nonpartisan, in-depth reports on important contemporary issues. Each issue contains a chronology of the issue, bibliographies and a pros and cons section.
- Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost) - Provides indexing and some full text for thousands of periodical articles in a variety of academic subject areas.
- Expanded Academic ASAP - Covers all academic subject areas and provides abstracts and some full text of articles from scholarly and popular periodicals.
- Lexis-Nexis Academic - Provides access to a wide range of information, including news articles and transcripts of broadcast news reports from across the U.S. as well as around the world. International news sources are translated into English.
- Alt-Press Watch (ProQuest) - Includes the full text of articles from newspapers, magazines and journals from alternative and independent presses.
- GenderWatch (ProQuest) - Includes publications that focus on how gender impacts a broad spectrum of subject areas.
- Grove Art - Provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, as well as links to image databases containing over 100,000 images. Try the search term manuscript and look for the section on illuminations.
To search the GCC Library Catalog or the C/WMARS Library Catalogs for books, do a Keyword search using words related to your topic.
Try a Subject search only if you know the correct Library of Congress Subject Heading for your topic.
Some specific subject headings to try in the C/WMARS Library Catalog are:
- Darfur
- Genocide and Human Rights
- Illuminations and Art
- Books -- History -- 400-1400
- Illumination of books and manuscripts -- History
- Illumination of books and manuscripts -- Iranian
- Illumination of books and manuscripts -- Islamic
- Women
Tip: Since most of our circulating collection is in storage due to renovations, you must request books through the Library Catalog a day in advance of checking them out.
Finding Quality Information on the InternetKeep in mind that there is a lot of misinformation on the Internet! For tips on determining the value of the information on a particular website, see the Website Evaluation handout. You can pick one up near the Library reference desk.
Evaluated DirectoriesEvaluated Directories include links to high-quality websites that have been selected by librarians, academics, or other experts. The GCC Library website provides links to some evaluated directories from the Search the Internet page.
Ready ReferenceThe Ready Reference page on the GCC Library website provides links to Internet sites containing information in several categories, including online encyclopedias, government resources, and statistics.
