Editorial: Community colleges in Western Massachusetts get job done

Almost a fifth of the 100 workers at Microtest Laboratories in Agawam got their basic training at Springfield Technical Community College.
The relationship between STCC’s biotechnology program and the company, which is currently manufacturing doses of a vaccine to treat patients with a gluten intolerance, is a symbiotic one. So it’s understandable that Microtest founder and scientific director Steven Richter and other local business leaders, who also depend on the region’s community colleges to help train the workers they need, are a bit wary of Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s proposal to bring the 15 Massachusetts community colleges under a central state administration.
