Did you know that you can enhance the appearance and display of your computer
and that you can magnify font sizes right from within Windows?
It’s true! The Windows DISPLAY PROPERTIES can give you a limited but very useful
amount of control over the size of screen items such as fonts, icons, and menus
and over how those items display on the screen.
Let’s take a look at some of the enhancements that you can do!
The examples used in this document are taken from the Windows 2000 operating
system. If you use another version of Windows, i.e. Windows 98, your display may
contain similar but slightly different options.
The Windows Display Properties can be accessed by right-clicking on any blank
spot on the Windows Desktop to bring up the pop-up menu. While the pop-up menu
displays, select “properties” from the list of selections as shown in Figure 1.
When the Display Properties load, click on the Appearance tab at the top as
shown in Figure 2. It is from within the Appearance tab that most of the screen
elements can be modified. The Scheme dropdown list, as shown in Figure 3,
contains large and extra large display schemes. These schemes can be used to
magnify the screen contents as a whole.
By using the Item dropdown list, shown in Figure 4, a user can modify specific
Windows display types individually. The size, color, font type, and font size of
that display type can be changed.
When used together, the scheme settings and the items settings can dramatically
enhance the look of your computer. What is more, you can do this without needing
other software such as screen magnification software!
