What are electronic texts?
Electronic texts are authored works that are formatted to display in an
electronic format. Electronic texts can be formatted to display in a web page,
in a handheld devise, or for use in a screen reader ( see information sheet on
What is a screen reader? ). These texts provide the content of many books in a
format that is accessible to users who need or prefer a different way of getting
information. While not every book is available in an electronic text format,
many books are available and especially available are those books that have
expired author copyrights. Electronic texts are sometimes referred to as
“e-books” and other similar terms.

Electronic texts can be found from a variety of sources. Some screen readers
(see information sheet on What is a Screen Reader?) come equipped with many
titles of electronic text on a CD. However, the most common way of finding
electronic texts is through the internet. There are many web sites that offer
free public domain downloads of electronic text files. Some other web sites
provide more premium services and charge fees for the ability to download their
electronic texts. Electronic text is also commercially available from many
publishers & booksellers for use with personal digital assistants (PDA’s) and
other similar technological devices.
