Night of comedy showcases growing GCC theater department

Dec. 11 and 12 marked a milestone for the GCC theater department. A group of 22 people, consisting of three alumni directors, two members of the GCC Board of Trustees, nine theater majors and eight non-majors worked together to present a night of comedy, "Five Short Lasting Laughs,” at the GCC café.

"This represents another step forward for the department as a whole,” says Kimberley Morin, director of the theater department. "It gave the new students a chance to work under a variety of directors with varying experience and ideas. Seeing the successes of our graduates helps to inspire those who are still working in the trenches.”

Alum Marnie Tibbetts served as a director as well as overall producer. "It feels good to come back to where it all started and share something with the new students here,” says Tibbetts, who completed her bachelor's degree in theater from UMass and was well equipped to step into the position.

"I really left it all up to the producer and the three other directors,” says Morin. "I could not have been any more proud of their work. To have such a thing happen with a department that has only had an associate's degree for under three years, it's pretty amazing! The department has seven new theater majors just this semester, and next semester there will be six one-act shows directed by the advanced students. We've come a long way, and we're not done yet.”
