Thirty-six out of 37 graduates of the Greenfield Community College associate degree nursing program passed their National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) on their first try, a pass rate of 97%, confirms Terri Mariani, director of the associate degree nursing program. The average pass rate for the country is in the 85% range, according to Mariani. Nursing graduates must pass the NCLEX test in order to attain licensure as a registered nurse in the state of their choice.
"We have very motivated students," says Mariani. "Plus, we educate them very well."
Mariani also credits the high success rate on the national exam to extraordinary pre-test assistance provided to GCC nursing graduates. The Franklin County Public Hospital Alumnae Association purchases a $45 review book for every graduate, and the GCC Foundation sponsors a five-day review course which the nursing grads get at a discounted rate, with the College providing financial aid for any student who can't afford the cost even with the discount. "GCC goes out of its way to make sure that every student who wants that course can take it," says Mariani.
"Everyone who wanted a job has found one," adds Mariani, who can be reached at (413) 775-1630.
