FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who are the writing and language tutors?
The writing tutors are students who have successfully completed at least the first two required English courses. The language tutors are native speakers in the language they tutor or students who have completed the upper intermediate levels of French or Spanish. All tutors have received faculty recommendations.

What is a writing or language tutoring session like?
Writing tutors help students with all parts of a writing assignment—brainstorming ideas, preparing a plan, using library resources and word processors, researching on line, writing drafts, and reviewing the final paper. In addition to providing writing assistance, these tutors help students with study skills such as note taking and preparing for essay examinations. Language tutors help with pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and conversation skills.

How do I make an appointment with a writing tutor?
You may make an appointment with a tutor by stopping in at the Learning Center (4th floor north) or phoning Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What if I want to meet with a tutor today?
We recommend that you plan ahead and make an appointment for tutoring. If you need help right away, however, feel free to stop by the Learning Center to see if a tutor is available.

What if English is not my native language?
College-enrolled ESOL students are encouraged to come to the Learning Center for help with writing.

What materials are available?
Tutors may offer students several handouts and brochures about writing, study skills, test preparation, and time management.

How much does tutoring cost?
All tutoring is free!

What should I bring to the tutoring sessions?
Students should bring their texts, handbook, assignment instructions, course syllabus and other materials related to the current assignment, as well as any drafts they have written.

How do I make special tutoring arrangements?
If you would like to plan for a permanent weekly tutoring appointment, or any other special tutoring arrangements, see the WraP Coordinator, Mary Ellen Kelly, kelly@gcc.mass.edu.
