History and mission

The Pioneer Valley Institute is our region's only program dedicated to our Great River Valley, its history, geology, biology, art, cultures & residents—past, present and future.

Founded in 1989 as an offshoot of the former Pioneer Valley Studies Program at Greenfield Community College, PVI has over the years, examined the history, cultures and arts, the geology and natural life, the agricultural and industrial traditions of the Connecticut River valley.

Our goal of becoming an outstanding educational organization promoting our valley through workshops, filed trips, art exhibits and seminars for people of all ages is closer than ever.

Join us in celebrating this extraordinary region, its growing diversity of cultures, its history and geologic wonders, its artists and craftspeople and its great wealth of natural resources.

The Institute welcomes the opportunity to co-sponsor programs that address issues of environmental, natural and cultural preservation as well.

Contact us by telephone, 413.775.1671 or by e-mail, herbertc@gcc.mass.edu

The Pioneer Valley institute is funded in part through the GCC Foundation.
