Prior to course registration, all first year students must take
the computerized placement tests in Reading Comprehension, English
and Mathematics. This assessment is designed to help new college
students achieve their educational goals by determining the most
appropriate academic placement in these critical skill areas.
You will receive the test results immediately after completing
the tests. These results identify the required English, mathematics
and reading courses most appropriate for you.
Tests are administered by the Testing Center Director or testing
proctors. Upon completion of testing, students meet with Testing
Center Staff to understand the meaning of each student's placement
scores and receive counseling on their next logical steps at GCC.
Students must then meet with their advisor to discuss their options
and register for the beginning sequence of courses appropriate
for them at GCC.
We strongly encourage students to practice taking these sample
computerized placement tests. Sample tests can be found by searching
the web. Studies show that students who practice do significantly
better on the tests than those who do not. We also suggest that
students who have been out of school for some time study both GED
and SAT prep books found at most bookstores and libraries. The GCC
Library has a GED Practice Test Book on reserve for your use.
