About GED testing

The GED (General Educational Development) Tests require you to use thinking skills and general knowledge to answer multiple-choice questions in these five subject areas:

  • Language arts - writing
  • Language arts - reading
  • Social studies
  • Science
  • Mathematics

Those who pass the GED Tests earn a High School Equivalency Diploma.

You can take the GED Tests if you are a Massachusetts resident who is . . .

  • 16 years of age or older
  • not currently enrolled in high school
  • not a high school graduate

Passing the tests

There are two critera for passing the GED Tests:

  1. Score at least 410 out of 800 on each of the five tests
  2. Obtain a minimum total score of 2250, which is an average of 450 per test

If you do not meet one or both of these requirements the first time you sit for the exam, you have one year from the first test date to retest in one or more subjects. Additional registration fees will apply.
