The New Semester nearly here!

The beginning of the semester can be a busy time and questions often arise about teaching and college resources. This list of links and reminders is a starting point for your semester at GCC, but can also help you plan for important activities and deadlines.

♦ Prepare your syllabus.

♦ Print the GCC Academic Calendar with holidays, professional dates and student deadlines:  Consult the activities calendar for faculty and staff

♦ Check course materials with the bookstore to make sure they are correct.

♦ Use your GCC email for all correspondence to students and colleagues. Mobile access instructions.

♦ Verify the days and times of the class you are teaching along with the classroom using at MyGCC.

♦ Download your class roster for the first day of that class from MyGCC. Check back for roster updates until the end of add/drop. Contact any wait list students if there will be room in the class.

♦ Take student contact information such as daytime & evening phone and GCC & personal email can help you reach students outside of class. If you need to cancel class for any reason, use MyGCC to alert students.

♦ Confirm your roster within the first weeks of class through MyGCC. This is critical for financial aid.

♦ Get to know student resources at GCC:

♦ The Testing Center is available for make-up exams as well as testing needs for students with accommodations. More information.

♦ Complete Early Progress Reports for any students who are having difficulty in your class. This can be related to behavioral issues, low grades or attendance problems. More information about EPRs available here.

♦ Have students complete the course evaluations on or before the last day of class. It can be helpful to get evaluations finished before the last class to avoid stress and missed evaluations due to weather cancellations. Choose a student volunteer to help administer the evaluations and return them to the division office. For more about evaluations see the faculty handbook.

♦ Submit Final Grades. Please get your grades submitted on time using MyGCC.

GCC Professional Half-Day for Staff

  • Think you know GCC… Think again!
January 13th Professional Half-day for Staff

11:30 – 12:30 Lunch and Diverse Desserts - Dining Commons
    12:30 – 1:30 Wellness in the Workplace - Fitness Center & E107
2:00 – 4:00 The GCC Enrollment Journey - Humanities Studio

The 4th Annual January Professional Half-Day for Staff will be Tuesday, January 13th (snow date January 15th). This year the theme is Think you know GCC…Think again! The program will include several components designed to help us better understand the experience of the prospective student on the journey through enrollment service, learn a little bit more about each other and how we can improve and enhance our own sense of wellbeing in the workplace. These topics were chosen to support the priorities President Pura identified at a recent All College: Enrollment Planning, Retention Support and Workforce Support and Wellness.

A great team of professional staff and support staff have come together to plan this afternoon program. The program is designed for and by staff. We also extend the invitation to any fulltime or adjunct faculty who would like to join us if you plan to be on campus January 13th.

We will begin with lunch in the Dining Commons for all from 11:30- 12:30 and will feature our first Diverse Desserts—we invite you to bring a favorite traditional dessert. Share with others your family’s favorite dessert recipe that reflects your cultural background.

Following lunch, you will have a chance to participate in a Wellness in the Workplace workshop from 12:30-1:30 in the Fitness Center/Multipurpose Room in the East Building. Bob LaPalme will demonstrate Aikido, using simple breathing patterns combined with basic movements for relaxation, focus and relation to basic Aikido self-defense technique. Additionally there will be an opportunity to learn a simple relaxing procedure that anyone can do at home for the self-treatment of low back pain. Tour the Fitness Center and see all it has to offer.

Then from 2:00-4:00 we will have a workshop entitled The GCC Enrollment Jourrney. Jay Gump will take us on a journey through Enrollment Services. This workshop is based on an experiment he conducted last spring in which he assumed the role of a prospective student and went through the process of applying, testing and enrolling in courses. Following a brief presentation of this experience we will break in to small groups to explore how we can improve this experience for students. This workshop will be valuable for all of us, regardless of what office you work in or role you fill at the college, as we all play a part in welcoming and supporting students as they start their academic journey at GCC. We hope you will plan to join us for all or part of the afternoon.

To help us plan for numbers, please register in advance for any or all parts of the program—lunch and the two workshops. Please feel free to contact any of the planning committee members if you have questions: Amy Proietti, Amy Sullivan, Donna Barton, Rebecca Fil, Sarah Wing, Judi Greene-Corvee.
