Why Stillpoint?

Why choose the Stillpoint Massage Therapy Program at GCC over other massage schools? The reasons are simple:

  • Small class size and low student:teacher ratio. Classes at Stillpoint are small; in technique classes, the ratio of students to teachers is 4:1.
  • Fully integrated curriculum. Courses at Stillpoint are interwoven to make all learning applicable and relevant in each class. The muscles you study in Myology in the morning are the muscles you manipulate in Technique in the afternoon.
  • A COMTA-accredited program that exceeds most other massage schools' required hours of training. At 750 hours of in-class time, our program exceeds the national standard of 500. In addition, Stillpoint was the first college-based accredited massage school in the Commonwealth and today remains one of only four Massachusetts programs to be fully accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).
  • Highly-qualified faculty. All of our faculty are professional bodywork practitioners with between 8 and 25 years of teaching experience.
  • Free tutoring. Graduates of Stillpoint are available as specialized tutors for current Stillpoint students in all courses.
  • Emphasis on entrepreneurship & practitioner well-being. All of our students develop and graduate with a comprehensive business plan. Our required business course covers issues such as ethics, licensing, taxes and insurance. A 3-credit course in injury prevention and longevity for practice teaches potential massage therapists techniques for working with one's own body safely.
  • Emphasis on ethics. All of our technique courses emphasize a philosophical mind-body connection. Stillpoint strives to develop ethical conscious practitioners who are both client centered in their work while maintaining effective therapeutic boundaries and applying clinical reasoning and assessment skills to meet client goals for wellness and health.
  • Hands-on training and service-learning. Stillpoint students work in a teacher-supervised clinic, gaining real-world experience in clinical assessment, record-keeping and taking medical histories. Students evaluate and treat acute and chronic injury in a 10-week supervised relationship with a practice client, and work in teams to provide chair massage to employees and clientele of non-profit community based business and schools to bring massage into the public experience. This Service Learning assignment teaches students how to find, set up and implement a massage volunteer event.
  • Academic environment. Because Stillpoint is a program of Greenfield Community College, students can take advantage of a wealth of college services, including academic tutoring, counseling, student health services, and our library. In addition, students receive college credit for coursework in the massage therapy certificate program which may count toward an associate's degree.
  • Availability of financial aid. And, because Stillpoint is housed at GCC, those who qualify may be eligible for financial aid to cover all aspects of our program--your massage table, too. Find out more at www.gcc.mass.edu/financial_aid/.
