In her own words: "Most families don’t have their parents’ FBI files in dusty boxes. Mine does. Hard Times are Fighting Times describes the legacy of my parents’ participation in radical leftist groups that sought to overthrow imperialism and capitalism through organizing and revolution. My photographs of their propaganda archive, surveillance records, family snapshots and current lives share this history from an intimate distance. This heritage inspires and moves me, but it can also be doctrinaire and oppressive, with enormous pressure to hew to the party line. Our family unit was its own political movement, nation-state, culture and system of belief. Because this is my story, I want to understand. How can I live up to these expectations? Do I want to? Which parts of these perspectives will I keep, and what will I discard?"

Alice Proujansky is a photographer looking at family labor: birth, work and motherhood. Her photo book Hard Times are Fighting Times (Gnomic Book, 2023), uses archival and documentary images to look at the legacy of radical activism in her family. It was shortlisted for a 2024 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award and the Rencontres d'Arles Author Book Award, and was selected for exhibition through Baxter St's Mid-Career Artists Initiative. She is currently working on Birth Work (Gnomic Book, 2026), a photobook about culturally-responsive birth work and Containment, a photography and quilting installation about psychological motherwork, labor and play. Alice has taught photography since 2002, most recently for Aperture, who also published her book Go Photo! A member of Women Photograph, Alice grew up in Greenfield, MA.
