Joan Dickinson: Colonial America & African Indentured Servants

Tuesday September 17

4:00pm-5:30pm

Library

The first in a series of events celebrating the soon-to-be 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, hosted by HIS 131 Women and Gender in American History. The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. It states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Alas, several national and state laws prohibited a large sector of the U.S. citizenship from voting, including Chinese and Indigenous populations. Jim Crow laws prohibited many black citizens from voting. In 2019 the U.S. still faces challenges to upholding the 19th Amendment.

Dr. Joan Dickinson—history teacher, psychologist, professor, behavioral health director and international consultant, wellness columnist, public speaker, yoga and meditation instructor and author—lectures on colonial American and African indentured servants.

Refreshments served.
