SUMMARY:Mass Incarceration from Inside
DESCRIPTION:What specific American factors contribute to so many people bei
ng locked up in "the land of the free?" Is crime simply worse in America t
han in other countries—and if so\, why? How can American society shift i
ts values and practices to decrease crime and the incidence of incarcerati
on? And can some of that transformative work be effectively done in carcer
al settings? Master's student Kylee Monkiewicz presents "The Land of the F
ree? Teaching and Learning About Mass Incarceration from Inside\," a refle
ction on personal and social accountability\, the two million lives on hol
d in American jails and prisons and the worthy human effort toward perfect
ing one's self in an imperfect world. Monkiewicz studies education and soc
ial Justice and equity at Boston University and teaches History of Incacer
eration in America at the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction. Re
freshments provided. Sorry—this event is at capacity!
