Adam Dzialo Scholarship

provides support for tuition, fees, textbooks and learning supplies to a GCC student or prospective student who has overcome adversity or faces additional barriers to the attainment of a college degree.

Alista Gradowski Scholarship
1 at $550

Given in memory of Alista Gradowski ’04 by her family, this scholarship is given to a first or second year GCC student who demonstrates effort in their studies and demonstrates financial need.

Eleanor N. Farber Scholarship
1 at $1000

Established by her family in memory of Mrs. Farber, this award is made to students with the College’s highest GPAs who have graduated from a Franklin County public high school, have completed between 10 and 16 courses and who will be returning to GCC in the fall.

Ethel "Risky" Case Award
1 at $665

Established by friends of Mrs. Case and supplemented from time to time by Mrs. Case, the award is made to a student who is a relative of a previous student at the college and who has demonstrated financial need.

Ethel Dow Wells Scholarship

The Ethel Dow Wells Foundation awards up to 10 scholarships annually to students from Franklin County who are attending Greenfield Community College. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and demonstrate good citizenship.  To be eligible to applicants must have resided in Franklin County for at least 2 years, completed the FAFSA and GCC financial aid applications, completed one full term at GCC prior to this semester and have an accumulated a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Fred R. and Helen K. Renfrew Memorial Scholarship

Income from this Fund shall be used to award scholarships annually to students who demonstrate a strong desire to obtain a college education despite financial barriers. Financial need will not necessarily be determined by eligibility for federal financial aid, but rather by the student’s description of how he or she would benefit from financial assistance through this scholarship.

Gretchen S. Watson Memorial Scholarship
2 at $2000

This scholarship, established by family, friends, colleagues, and students in memory of Gretchen S. Watson, Professor of English at Greenfield Community College from 1985 to 2006, is awarded to a student who embodies the qualities Professor Watson brought to the college. Intellectual curiosity, a passion for learning, and a sense that everyone benefits when we are all responsible and respectful members of the world community marked Gretchen’s identity as a person and a teacher. One of the pioneers in online learning at GCC, Professor Watson motivated and helped other faculty to integrate technology into their teaching. The Gretchen S. Watson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who embodies the qualities Professor Watson brought to the classroom: intellectual curiosity, a passion for learning and responsible membership in the world community. Preference is given to a student who is returning to the GCC in the fall.

Harrison Parker Scholarship
1 at $1750

Given to students from Franklin County who have demonstrated financial need, with a preference given to West County residents (living in the town of Ashfield, Buckland, Colrain, Conway, Charlemont, Hawley, Heath, Monroe, Rowe or Shelburne).

Horizon8 Scholarship

The Horizon8 Scholarship will sponsor the full cost of a Horizon8 student’s college education from the time of student acceptance through graduation with an associate degree. The Horizon8 fund will cover a recipient’s college tuition, fees, and book expenses that are not covered by other scholarships or financial aid. With the intention of sponsoring candidates through a bachelor’s degree, the fund will also cover a recipient’s costs for applying to and transferring to another college to pursue a bachelor’s degree. This scholarship is intended for young adults whose path to obtaining a college education is or has been significantly challenged by personal, life and economic obstacles. Finalists may be required to meet (via Zoom) with the scholarship committee as part of the selection process. The purpose of the meeting is to afford the committee the opportunity to be sure the scholarship preferences of the Horizon8 program are being met. Horizon8 scholars will also be encouraged to meet virtually or in-person periodically to share their stories and progress.

Eligibility

  • The student may be currently attending GCC on a full-time or part-time basis, or may be in the process of enrolling
  • Preference is for candidates who have not had a typical path from high school to college completion but, instead, have struggled to complete college for various reasons
  • The preferred candidate may have dropped out at some point—or not attended college as planned for reasons related to obstacles preventing typical effort and success
  • Recipients should submit an application that includes a personal statement for why they would like to be in the Horizon8 program
  • There is no GPA requirement for the Horizon8 Scholarship
  • Recipients should be interested in going on to complete a bachelor’s degree

Transfer Scholarships
Alumni Scholarship
2 at $900

Established by the GCC Alumni Association to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of GCC graduates. The scholarships are awarded to graduates who have had at least two semesters on the Dean’s list or have a GPA of 3.35 or better, who have earned a minimum of 40 credits, and who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university. One scholarship is awarded to a student of the arts and one to a student of the sciences.

Anne M. Wiley Gender and Social Justice Scholarship
1 at $1025

The Dr. Anne M. Wiley Gender and Social Justice Fund, established in 2013, is a permanently endowed fund providing scholarships to Greenfield Community College students who have completed at least two courses in the liberal arts and who have demonstrated a commitment to gender, social justice and activism to make change for greater social justice and gender equity. Students can use the award for their financial needs, including but not limited to transfer, housing, child care and other needs besides tuition and fees.

Buz Eisenberg Civic Engagement Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and social justice, have a 2.75 GPA and intend to continue their education beyond an associate degree. Students who are planning to transfer in the fall are eligible for this scholarship.

Drs. Frederick & Helen Ellis Scholarships
3 at $1600

This scholarship is given to a non-traditional student who has completed 30 credits at GCC, maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and is responsible for financing their own education. Although it is not a requirement, preference is given for a student who is in the Liberal Arts program or who plans to become a teacher. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who intends to complete a bachelor’s degree at any of the four (4) designated institutions: University of Massachusetts; Smith College; Springfield College; or Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Jean & Stan Cummings Scholarship for Environmental Studies

The Stan and Jean Cummings Environmental Studies Scholarship was established by Jean Cummings in 2007 in memory of her husband, Stanley L. Cummings. It is awarded to a highly committed environmental studies major, with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, with some consideration to financial need, who is transferring to a four-year college and will be continuing to work in this field.

Robert "Rob" Mugar Yacubian Transfer Award

The award is made in the spring to a GCC student who is graduating and transferring to a four-year college. Applicants should have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA.

Saul Ellenbogen Scholarship

Established by son David Ellenbogen (a former GCC faculty member) in memory of his father. This scholarship is awarded to students who are transferring to a four-year college and who demonstrate financial need.

Criminal Justice Scholarships
Valerie Anne Grant Knowlton Law Enforcement Scholarship
1 at $650

This scholarship was established by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Val Knowlton, Chief of Security at the College for 19 years. It is provided to a student pursuing the A.S. in Criminal Justice who has completed at least one semester, is returning to GCC the following year to continue the Criminal Justice program, and has a GPA of 3.0 or has been on the Dean’s List at GCC. Preference will be given to a female student.

Scholarships for Education Majors
Art & Marjorie Ruggles Scholarship
1 at $800

This scholarship will be given to an outstanding student in Early Childhood Education who exhibits excellence in related courses as well as their work with children. Applicants must show a commitment to work with children upon graduation.

Catherine V. Finnegan Scholarship Fund
1 at $1000

This scholarship, established by Catherine M. Finnegan and Catherine C. Beck, provides scholarships for students in or completing the Education Program. Recipients of this scholarship must have completed 50 credits at Greenfield Community College, maintained a minimum 3.2 GPA and intends to transfer to a four-year college or university to continue their studies in the field of education.

Constance and Julius Roth Scholarship

The Constance and Julius Roth Scholarship is awarded to a student in the Early Education Program who has completed 30 credits at GCC and maintained a 2.5 GPA.

The Tricia Donovan Family Scholarship is awarded to new Greenfield Community College students who are single mothers who have obtained their high school equivalency diploma (HiSet).

Women Investing in Women Scholarship

The Women Investing in Women Scholarship was established in 2007 by Kathy Lemay and Jean Simmons together with eight founders: Terry Boyce, Amy Jamrog, Caroline Mack, Sharon Meyers, Tina Stevens, Kathy Vranos, Nikki Welsh and Molly Wood. This financial gift is given to a female student who is a student at GCC and is planning to enter a career in service or business. The recipient must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, submit a resume and supplemental essay which includes why GCC was selected for study and the rationale for selection of their career goal or plans.

Deborah Palmeri Memorial Practical Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship will be made available to currently enrolled GCC PN students who intends to transfer into the GCC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program and become a Registered Nurse. To be used for tuition and/or fees, this scholarship is awarded to a student who has financial need, is hard-working and displays commitment, compassion, respect and love of learning in their developing role in practical nursing.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Intends to begin a career in nursing
  • Is a non-traditional student, as typically defined by the institution
  • Has previous work experience and been responsible for their own support
  • Has demonstrated willingness to take the initiative to better themselves through enrollment in higher education

The Dvora Cohen Nursing Scholarship was established in loving memory of GCC Nursing alumna Dvora Cohen to support GCC Nursing students.

Florence Rawson Bramley Scholarship

This scholarship is for the best OB/GYN nursing student who is planning to work in a medical/surgical department or is taking additional courses in this academic area.

Gordon and Pam Oakes Nursing Scholarship

Joanne M. Ball Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2004 by Joanne M. Ball to support the education of future nurses. It is awarded to students with a strong academic record and high financial need.

Judith Whitaker, RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship
1 at $950

This scholarship is awarded to a Franklin County resident who successfully completed their first year of the Associate Degree Nursing program at Greenfield Community College and plans to enroll in the upcoming fall semester. To be used for tuition and/or fees, this scholarship is awarded to a student who has financial need, is hard working and displays commitment, compassion, respect and love of learning in their developing nursing practice.

Neipp Family Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to students of Greenfield Community College working toward an Associate in Science in Nursing. Recipients must have earned a minimum of 30 credits at GCC, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 minimum and demonstrate the personal qualities of integrity, industry, promise, attention to detail, high standards of performance and the ability to work with others.

Nursing Pursuit Scholarship
4 at $2500

Students must demonstrate financial need and must be currently enrolled at GCC as either a matriculated Practical Nursing (PN) or Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program student or taking standard nursing program prerequisite courses, and in any instance intending to continue through the ADN program.

Sally J. Ahlskog Scholarship
1 at $2900

The Sally J. Ahlskog scholarship is awarded to students in the GCC Nursing Program. Recipients of this scholarship must demonstrate 1) financial need, 2) academic success, 3) a passion for nursing with an awareness of the rewards and challenges of the field and 4) a mature attitude.

Sharon L. Lorenz Award
1 at $850

This award will be given to a GCC Practical Nursing student who will be transferring into the college’s Associate Degree Nursing program. This student must have been a resident of Franklin County for three or more years and have proven academic abilities. Candidates must have applied for financial aid.

Health Occupations Scholarships
Steve & Michele Kravetz, Sharon Meyers and Bettie Kravetz Scholarship for Health Occupations

The Kravetz Meyers Health Occupations Scholarship, established in 2005 by Steven Kravetz ’81, Sharon Meyers ’78 and Bettie and David Kravetz, is given to a student studying in a health occupations program who has attended at least one semester at GCC, has good academic performance and demonstrates financial need.

Teddy Bear Pools, Inc. Scholarship
2 at $500

Established in 2012, this scholarship was made possible by Theodore and Barbara Hebert. Awards are made to students enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) credits, who maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA, are employed at least 20 hours per week and will be returning to GCC in the fall.

Manufacturing Scholarships
Savage Legacy Scholarship
1 at $1400

This scholarship is for Greenfield Community College students who are enrolled in academic courses leading to a career in the field of advanced manufacturing. Eligible students must be residents of Franklin County who are enrolled full time and maintain a minimum of 3.0 grade average.

Social Science Scholarships
Adam Markowski Scholarship
1 at $500

The Adam Markowski Scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated an interest in political science or sociology. Applicants must be residents of Franklin County, students from single-parent families, and be entering their sophomore year in the fall. While not a requirement, applicants who have an athletic background and an interest in physical fitness, have had an association with the Big Brother/Big Sister program, or have expressed an interest in supporting the ideals of GCC may be given preference.

Virginia Low Women’s Studies Award

The Virginia Low Women’s Studies Award was established in honor of Professor Emerita Virginia Low, pioneering spirit and founding mother of Women’s Studies at Greenfield Community College. The award is made annually to a current GCC student, of any gender, who meets the following criteria:

  • has completed (or is currently enrolled in) one or more courses included in the GCC Gender and Women’s Studies curriculum, or a gender-themed course
  • demonstrates academic excellence
  • shows continued commitment to gender and women’s studies, gender equity, and social justice

Scholarships for ESOL or International Students
Brud and Irmarie Jones Scholarship for International Students

Established in 2007, these scholarships are awarded to current or former ESOL or international students with a minimum GPA of 2.5, in order to make it easier to have additional education and a chance at a better future. The scholarships are given to students who have overcome the barriers of a new language and culture and who have shown eagerness toward learning in the study of English or of other subjects.

Goldman Family Scholarship
1 at $475

Established by Josh and Marina Goldman in memory of GCC Professor Dovi Afesi, this scholarship is awarded to an international student who is not eligible for any state or federal financial aid, but whose income level would have otherwise made them eligible. Recipient is required to meet with the donor one time/year while attending GCC.

McLellan/ Carpenter ESOL Scholarship
1 at $760

The McLellan/Carpenter Scholarship is awarded to a currently enrolled GCC student who has the courage and determination to study at a college in a new country. The award recognizes students who have met the initial challenges of learning another language, and who continues to show significant progress in the use of English. Students who are planning to transfer in the fall are eligible for this scholarship.

Humanities Scholarships
Archibald MacLeish Liberal Arts Scholarship
1 at $825

The MacLeish Scholarship is awarded annually to a returning student enrolled in an Associate of Arts/Liberal Arts degree program who demonstrates general academic excellence and competence in writing.

Supplemental Application Materials:

Submit a supplemental statement of approximately 250 words, responding personally and/or critically to the MacLeish poem Ars Poetica. Read the poem at poets.org.

Arthur W. Shaw Scholarship
1 at $675

This scholarship was made possible by the friends of Dr. Shaw, a GCC English professor who wrote Excellence and Opportunity: The Story of Greenfield Community College 1962-1987. It was inspired by Dr. Shaw’s curiosity and talent. The award is given to a humanities student who displays this same curiosity and talent and has completed at least two semesters at GCC.

Phyllis Rubin Nahman Scholarship

The Phyllis Rubin Nahman Scholarship was established by colleagues, friends, students, and family of Professor Emerita Nahman. Guided by her belief in the transformative power of the written word and the responsibility we each hold to use what we learn to improve the world, she empowered generations of students to access literacy in its broadest sense as a key to their own intellectual, political, and spiritual freedom and sense of equality. The Phyllis Rubin Nahman Scholarship is for a currently enrolled GCC student from any academic area who is a passionate reader committed to continuing their education and who demonstrates financial need.

Virginia Low Women’s Studies Award

The Virginia Low Women’s Studies Award was established in honor of Professor Emerita Virginia Low, pioneering spirit and founding mother of Women’s Studies at Greenfield Community College. The award is made annually to a current GCC student, of any gender, who meets the following criteria:

  • has completed (or is currently enrolled in) one or more courses included in the GCC Gender and Women’s Studies curriculum, or a gender-themed course
  • demonstrates academic excellence
  • shows continued commitment to gender and women’s studies, gender equity, and social justice

The Allan McGuane Scholarship has been established to assist a single parent who is pursuing an associate degree and who demonstrates financial need.

Deborah L. Rubenzahl Award

The many friends of Deborah L. Rubenzahl made the Deborah L. Rubenzahl Scholarship Award possible. Applicants must have completed 30 credits by the end of spring semester with a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate excellent academic work, an interest in a career in social services, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice. Preference is given to a returning female student, 24 years of age or older, who is a parent.

Deborah Palmeri Memorial Practical Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship will be made available to currently enrolled GCC PN students who intends to transfer into the GCC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program and become a Registered Nurse. To be used for tuition and/or fees, this scholarship is awarded to a student who has financial need, is hard-working and displays commitment, compassion, respect and love of learning in their developing role in practical nursing.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Intends to begin a career in nursing
  • Is a non-traditional student, as typically defined by the institution
  • Has previous work experience and been responsible for their own support
  • Has demonstrated willingness to take the initiative to better themselves through enrollment in higher education
Drs. Frederick & Helen Ellis Scholarships

This scholarship is given to a non-traditional student who has completed 30 credits at GCC, maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and is responsible for financing their own education. Although it is not a requirement, preference is given for a student who is in the Liberal Arts program or who plans to become a teacher. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who intends to complete a bachelor’s degree at any of the four (4) designated institutions: University of Massachusetts; Smith College; Springfield College; or Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

First Generation Scholarship

The First Generation Scholarship was established in honor of Clare Higgins. It is awarded to a GCC student who is a first generation college student, with a minimum 3.5 GPA, and is studying for a career in education or planning to begin a career in public service.

Robert and Cynthia Stowe Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to students in Franklin County for whom college attendance is otherwise unlikely. Preference is given to female students.

The Viencek Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to GCC students, with a preference for young parents, who demonstrate financial need and intend to complete an Associate Degree.

Established by the Hannon family to provide a scholarship for an outstanding student in business or a business-related major. Recipients must be Franklin County residents and graduate of a Franklin County public high school.

Melanson Greenfield Community College Accounting Scholarship

The Melanson Accountants/Auditors scholarship program was established to provide scholarships to individuals pursuing a Bachelor and/or Master’s degree in Accounting. A scholarship will be awarded to a deserving GCC student hoping to find a career in public accounting and who also shares in Melanson’s core values of honesty, kindness, fairness, perseverance, bravery and judgment.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Greenfield Community College graduating students with an associate degree in Business Administration–Transfer or enrolled in the Computer-Assisted Bookkeeping Certificate program
  • Enrolled (or will be enrolled) at least half-time at a public or private college or university
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Extra-curricular activities and leadership activities are taken into consideration
Richard L. Holbrook, Jr. Scholarship

The Holbrook Scholarship was established to provide a scholarship to a student who has interest in pursuing a business-related degree and has successfully completed at least one semester. The recipient must have a strong academic record and financial need.

William & Patricia Jolicoeur Scholarship

The Jolicoeur Scholarship was established for a student who will be entering their second year at GCC or who has successfully completed at least two semesters and who has interest in pursuing a business-related degree. This award requires that the recipient has some exposure to free market economic theory during the course of their education at GCC.

STEM Scholarships
Carleton P. Stinchfield Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Stinchfield, a GCC chemistry professor. Students must have at least twenty (20) credits at GCC with a minimum GPA of 3.0, at least a B grade in a chemistry course, the demonstrated ability to overcome personal or academic disadvantages and a goal to apply their study of science to improving the quality of life.

Daniel J. Haley Scholarship

The Daniel J. Haley Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to students in the GCC Engineering/Science Program who intend to transfer to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a focus in Chemical, Civil, Electrical or Computer Systems Engineering. Recipients of this scholarship must have completed 45 credits at GCC and maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Domenic J. Ferrante Engineering Scholarship

Established in memory of Dominic J. Ferrante in 2007 by his wife, Lorraine, and family, this scholarship is provided for an engineering student who has a strong academic record and demonstrates financial need.

Jean & Stan Cummings Scholarship for Environmental Studies

The Stan and Jean Cummings Environmental Studies Scholarship was established by Jean Cummings in 2007 in memory of her husband, Stanley L. Cummings. It is awarded to a highly committed environmental studies major, with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, with some consideration to financial need, who is transferring to a four-year college and will be continuing to work in this field.

The Mario Rambissoon Engineering Scholarship is awarded to a current GCC student in good standing who intends to transfer to a 4-year institution for a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Although not a requirement, preference is given to a female student.

Neipp Family Scholarship Fund-Mathematics

This scholarship is awarded annually to students of Greenfield Community College working toward an Associate’s Degree, with a concentration in taking mathematics courses, and plans to later continue their education toward a baccalaureate degree. Recipients must have earned a minimum of 30 credits at GCC, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 minimum and demonstrate the personal qualities of integrity, industry, promise, attention to detail, high standards of performance and the ability to work with others.

This scholarship is for a student who resides in a town served by Eversource, is eligible for financial aid, is enrolled in the engineering program, has earned at least 15 credits and has maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Anne M. Wiley Gender and Social Justice Scholarship

The Dr. Anne M. Wiley Gender and Social Justice Fund, established in 2013, is a permanently endowed fund providing scholarships to Greenfield Community College students who have completed at least two courses in the liberal arts and who have demonstrated a commitment to gender, social justice and activism to make change for greater social justice and gender equity. Students can use the award for their financial needs, including but not limited to transfer, housing, child care and other needs besides tuition and fees.

Greenfield Community College and the Traprock Center for Peace and Justice have created the Wally and Juanita Nelson Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established to support and encourage study in the field(s) of peace, social justice studies and the environment.
