Greenfield Community College Celebrates New Free Community College Program for Massachusetts Residents Posted on July 30, 2024 July 30, 2024 Greenfield Community College (GCC) is thrilled to celebrate the recent signing of the state budget by Governor Maura Healey, which includes funding for the creation of MassEducate. Building on the success of MassReconnect, which has already transformed access to higher education for many, MassEducate represents a significant expansion in educational opportunities for our community. MassReconnect, which offers free community college, books and supplies allowance to students aged 25 and older without an associate or bachelor’s degree, remains funded. MassEducate will benefit students of all ages who may or may not already possess an associate degree. Eligible students will have their tuition and fees covered. Additionally, students meeting certain income criteria will receive up to $1,200 per academic year for books, supplies, and other expenses. Together, MassEducate and MassReconnect provide an unparalleled opportunity for all Massachusetts residents without a bachelor’s degree to earn an associate degree or certificate at any community college in the state without financial burden. “This is such a historic achievement for the Commonwealth,” said GCC President Michelle Schutt.” MassEducate will allow people, some of whom may have felt college was out of reach, the opportunity to pursue a free community college education. We are incredibly grateful to the legislature and the Governor for investing in the future of Massachusetts.” Massachusetts residents qualify for free community college if they have not previously earned a bachelor’s degree, have resided in Massachusetts for at least one year, have completed the FAFSA and are enrolled in at least six credits per semester. The removal of tuition and fees is expected to dramatically impact lives across the Commonwealth and in our community. Last year, following the establishment of MassReconnect, community colleges saw a historic 8% rise in enrollment. MassEducate will enable even more residents to take advantage of the incredible opportunities offered by institutions like GCC. Greenfield Community College is committed to providing high-quality education and fostering academic excellence. GCC offers a wide range of programs and initiatives designed to support student success and community engagement.
