{"id":4370,"date":"2025-08-08T10:19:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T14:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/?p=4370"},"modified":"2025-09-15T10:08:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T14:08:48","slug":"arwen-king-greenfield-community-college-honors-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/08\/08\/arwen-king-greenfield-community-college-honors-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Arwen King: Greenfield Community College Honors Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a full-time Liberal Arts Social Sciences major, Phi Theta Kappa Officer and Student Representative on the GCC Honors Board, Arwen King has woven himself into the fabric of Greenfield Community Collegee\u2014not just as a learner, but as a leader.<\/p>\n<p>With long-term plans to pursue a Master\u2019s degree in Library Sciences, Arwen is driven by a desire to bridge the gap between knowledge systems and human behavior. \u201cI\u2019m passionate about these fields,\u201d he shares, \u201cand I find there is a significant overlap between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That same passion led Arwen to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/academics\/honors\/\">Honors Scholar Program<\/a> at GCC, encouraged by a mentor who recognized his potential. \u201cMy professor and advisor, Joshua Becker, suggested I apply after seeing my work in Intro to Psychology,\u201d Arwen recalls. \u201cI have been a proud Honors Scholar ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Honors Scholar Program has been more than just an academic designation for Arwen, it\u2019s been transformative. \u201cBeing an Honors Scholar has been incredibly fulfilling,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s allowed me to delve deeper into materials, and to learn beyond the boundaries of a typical class.\u201d Two standout experiences so far have been completing a 15-part literature review and presenting a research paper at the Massachusetts Undergraduate Research Conference at UMass\u2014achievements he says would not have happened without the program\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the academic growth, Arwen emphasizes the strong relationships he\u2019s formed with faculty through honors projects and deeper classroom engagement. \u201cI\u2019ve been able to make strong connections with my professors that will guide me through my academic journey,\u201d he says. \u201cThe program helped me become a better student overall. Things I used to struggle with are now second nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Arwen remains focused on his academic goals, with plans to eventually pursue a Master\u2019s in Library Sciences through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/academics\/simmons-masters-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simmons University\u2019s School of Library and Information Science degree program<\/a>, hosted at GCC. He hopes to become a librarian or archivist, a role he sees as central to helping future scholars thrive. \u201cI believe that freedom of information and library work are both extremely important, now and for the future of humankind,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n<p>GCC itself holds a special place for Arwen. \u201cIt allows me to connect with others and build a community,\u201d he reflects. \u201cThere\u2019s a sense of closeness at GCC\u2014you can feel it in the classroom, the food pantry, even in the hallways. If I ever trip in the hallway, someone\u2019s always there to ask if I\u2019m okay. That\u2019s not something you find everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To students considering joining the Honors Scholar Program, Arwen offers heartfelt encouragement: \u201cGo for it!
