What is orientation?

Orientation is a one-day event where incoming students are welcomed to GCC, and get the chance to connect with staff, orientation leaders, and other incoming students. The purpose of orientation is to ease the transition into college by making connections and introducing students to the GCC community and its culture, values, and the many student support services offered here.

Do I have to attend orientation?

Orientation is required for new degree/certificate-seeking students, dual-enrolled students, and students who have been away from GCC for 3 or more years. However, as orientation provides valuable information about campus culture, resources, and student services, every incoming student is encouraged to attend.

Do I have to go to all of the orientation events?

Yes! In order to receive credit on your student account for participating in orientation, you must complete participate in all parts of orientation. For the Fall 2021 semester, this means attending one of our orientation webinars for the full duration, and completing the survey at the end to receive credit for attending.

What should I bring with me?

Students should bring attend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes to allow for easy movement to different venues. It is also advised that you bring a device or paper that allows you to take notes.

What should I do if I want to change my orientation date?

It is no problem to change your date. Just return to the registration page on this website and submit a new registration.

Will I get a campus tour?

As an alternative to campus tours, Student Guides will be sprinkled throughout the hallways during the first week of classes. These Student Guides will be there to help students navigate the GCC campus.

Where will I go for check-in?

Check-in for orientation occurs in the Main building in the 1st floor lobby. Please enter through the primary glass entrance. You can use the stair case or the elevator to the right to access the 1st floor lobby.

Where should I park for orientation?

Parking for orientation is available in the student lots. ollow the directional signage along the driveway and at the campus rotary. Primary parking will occur in parking lots A and B.

What do I do if I require specific accommodations during an orientation session?

Please inform us if you require any specific accommodations. At the end of the registration form there will be an open text box that you can use to describe your requested accommodation. Please use this space so we can plan accordingly.

When do I get my ID card?

The Library issues student identification cards to all new students who are registered for courses. The Library is open Monday – Friday: 9am to 4pm. You will need to bring a photo ID with you to get your GCC ID.

Do I need to pay for orientation?

There is no additional cost for orientation. Orientation is a student program that is covered by student activity fees.

When will I receive materials and be able to register for orientation?

Registration for orientation is available at the start of open registration for each upcoming term.

When should I register for orientation?

We strongly encourage you to register for orientation as soon as possible and definitely as soon as you have registered for your courses. The registration site closes the week before orientation so that we can finalize numbers. Please do not wait until the last minute to sign up!

How do I register for orientation?

To register for orientation, please use the registration link on this website. Once you complete the form and submit your information, you have completed your registration process.

Can family members attend with me?

Family members are certainly welcome to attend orientation. It is important to note that space is limited and most of our content is geared directly to new students. We will be offering a family workshop opportunity during orientation. We are asking students to indicate if they will have a family member join them during the registration process so that we can plan accordingly.

What if none of the available dates work for me?

We do our best to schedule a variety of dates, times, and formats to meet the many needs of our diverse student body. Still, we realize that the options that we provide may not work with your schedule. If you truly cannot make one of our sessions, an online Moodle orientation will be available. The benefit of attending one of our webinars is that students will have the opportunity to to ask questions, receive advice, and connect with orientation leaders and other incoming students.

Are meals provided during the sessions?

Yes! Refreshments and meals are provided at each of our orientation programs.
