{"id":2070,"date":"2025-04-25T13:45:58","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T17:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/newplum\/?p=2070"},"modified":"2025-04-25T13:45:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T17:45:58","slug":"a-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/plum\/a-conversation\/","title":{"rendered":"A Conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, my mental illnesses and I are talking<br \/>\nin my head,<br \/>\nand it looks like one of those therapy-based support groups.<br \/>\nI\u2019m sitting in the middle since it\u2019s my turn to go.<br \/>\nThey all have their outfits.<br \/>\nAutism wears the third new outfit that day,<br \/>\nbright and mismatched but so very me,<br \/>\nrocking slightly in their chair, hands fidgeting with the hem.<br \/>\nADHD is pacing, barefoot,<br \/>\ntheir oversized sweater hanging off one shoulder,<br \/>\nan iced espresso cup in one hand,<br \/>\na notebook in the other,<br \/>\nfilled with half-finished ideas they\u2019ll never revisit.<br \/>\nDyscalculia is sitting cross-legged on the floor,<br \/>\nsurrounded by a scatter of receipts and numbers<br \/>\nthey can\u2019t quite make sense of,<br \/>\ntheir face scrunched in frustration as they doodle<br \/>\nto forget how lost they feel.<br \/>\nC-PTSD sits stiffly in the corner,<br \/>\nwearing what I wore on the worst day of my life,<br \/>\ntheir eyes darting like they\u2019re waiting for the floor to crack open<br \/>\nand swallow us whole.<br \/>\nEating Disorder lounges on the edge of the group,<br \/>\nclutching an empty plate like a trophy,<br \/>\ntheir oversized hoodie swallowing them,<br \/>\na smirk on their face that hides the ache underneath.<br \/>\nSertraline is there, too,<br \/>\nsitting quietly off to the side,<br \/>\nwearing scrubs like a patient nurse,<br \/>\npassing me a glass of water and a small yellow pill.<br \/>\nThey don\u2019t say much,<br \/>\nbut their presence feels steady, grounding,<br \/>\na whisper that says, \u201cKeep going.\u201d<br \/>\nADHD blurts out, \u201cWe\u2019ve got so much to do!\u201d<br \/>\nTheir words overlap with Autism\u2019s,<br \/>\nwho mutters, \u201cCan we just do one thing at a time? Please?\u201d<br \/>\nDyscalculia groans, \u201cDo we have to do anything involving numbers?<br \/>\nI\u2019ll mess it up again\u2014I always do.\u201d<br \/>\nC-PTSD doesn\u2019t speak, but the weight of their silence is deafening,<br \/>\na constant reminder of the shadows we carry.<br \/>\n5<br \/>\nEating Disorder pipes up, their voice sharp and sly,<br \/>\n\u201cWe should skip dinner tonight. You don\u2019t really need it, do you?\u201d<br \/>\nTheir words cut, but Sertraline catches my gaze,<br \/>\nsteady as ever, reminding me to breathe.<br \/>\nAnd me?<br \/>\nI sit in the middle,<br \/>\nthe only one without an outfit,<br \/>\nholding all their voices like tangled threads.<br \/>\n\u201cMaybe,\u201d I say, though my voice shakes,<br \/>\n\u201cmaybe we don\u2019t have to figure it all out today.<br \/>\nMaybe the fact that we\u2019re here,<br \/>\ntalking, breathing, existing,<br \/>\nis enough.\u201d<br \/>\nThe room doesn\u2019t fall silent\u2014<br \/>\nit never does\u2014<br \/>\nbut for a moment, it feels lighter.<br \/>\nAnd I think,<br \/>\nmaybe I\u2019ll make it through another day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, my mental illnesses and I are talking in my head, and it looks like one of those therapy-based support groups.
