A poem tells the heart: it must be true\u2014
\nunless perception is a lie and all
\nconsidered feeling false; unless we err
\nby saying, steal the essence of the said
\nor bury it among the speechless dead.
\nIf by my lines I mean to raise, to stir
\nawake, to show, if you should look and call
\nit wrong, or say I have no right, where do
\nI go? What should I write, distrusted, if
\nnot what I have written in good faith?
\nWhat is the spirit of the art? Let true
\nbe wider than the witness, I or you;
\nlet words give substance to the poem\u2019s wraith
