{"id":2560,"date":"2026-08-13T06:47:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T10:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/plum\/?p=2560"},"modified":"2026-08-13T06:47:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T10:47:42","slug":"we-still-look-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/plum\/we-still-look-up\/","title":{"rendered":"We Still Look Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We still look up<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>every time an airplane flies overhead<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>because it no longer means the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the attacks<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>I walk through midtown Manhattan for the first time.<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>I have not left my apartment<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>except to buy food in my neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Now here I am<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>walking through a ghost town<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>of smiling faces on lampposts<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>homemade flyers in search of the missing.<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>I look to the skies<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>devoid of all airplanes<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>and see in the faces of those around me<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>the expectant looks of impending disaster.<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>These are not tourists,<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>awed by our skyscrapers<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>because there are no tourists now.<\/p>\n<p>When the planes return to the skies<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>it continues to happen.<\/p>\n<p>We still look up<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>every time an airplane flies overhead<br \/>\n<span class=\"poetry-spacer\" style=\"display: inline-block;width: 2em\">\u00a0<\/span>because it no longer means the same thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We still look up \u00a0every time an airplane flies overhead \u00a0because it no longer means the same thing.
