\nhusbands and wives driving
\nto the train station, 6:17 a.m.
\nFords and Chevys lining up
\naround the U-shaped curve
\nhusbands stepping out of
\ncars and onto double-decker
\ntrain, Tribune news in hand,
\nchugging off to work each day.<\/p>\n
All the mothers did it.
\nEach evening children rode
\nalong to pick up dad, cars
\nlining on the horseshoe, heat on
\nor window down, waiting for the
\nclick and clack of super-fast
\n5:55p.m. arriving home for
\nmeatloaf on the stove.<\/p>\n
All the mothers did it, but
\nhere\u2019s the twist: on the route
\neach morning, husbands
\ndrove, kissed their wives and
\nwaved goodbye, as wives slid
\nonto driver\u2019s side, easy on
\nthose old bench seats, curlers
\nstill in hair, to coffee perking
\nin its pot.<\/p>\n
All the mothers drove from
\nhome to meet the Burlington,
\nchild leaning over rear plastic
\nseat, no belts invented yet.
\nDad waved hello and quickly
\nstrode to driver\u2019s side of car,
\nwhile mother – yes you
\nguessed it \u2013 slid onto passenger
\nseat so dad could drive the
