Restless, mourning for my dying friend,
\nI hear a vixen in the night. Her rasping
\nscreams scratch the air until she\u2019s answered
\nby the male. Across white fields, red foxes
\ntrot and cry while I drift into sleep. They
\npass beneath my window and hurl love notes
\nthrough the shutters, jerking me awake.
\nAs they saunter off, their brittle tune
\nbegins to fade. I cup my ears to hold their
\nsinging close, as if this were a charm
\nto keep my friend alive a little longer.
\nAfter these two vulpine lovers vanish
\nI am winded. Wrestling with death\u2019s art
