Personal Statement

All scholarships require a 250-500 word personal, biographical statement. Your personal statement is your moment to shine, show your personality, share your goals and passions, and compel our application reviewers. We encourage you to take care in creating your statement, as it is your chance to stand out from other applicants. Your personal statement should address the following:

Tell us about who you are and what has shaped you
Include interests, personal qualities, motivations, formative experiences, identities, hopes and dreams, and future goals (life, work, educational)
If you’re a current student, tell us about your experience at GCC: your major, extracurricular involvement, personal growth etc.

We strongly suggest that you compose your personal and supplemental statements in a separate application (Google Documents, Microsoft Word, etc.) and copy and paste them here. We also recommend that you choose the "Save and Continue" option after you have entered your statements and before you hit submit!

Gretchen S. Watson Scholarship

$2100 awarded to a student who embodies the qualities Professor Watson brought to the College. Intellectual curiosity, a passion for learning and a sense that everyone benefits when we are all responsible and respectful members of the world community marked Gretchen's identity as a person and a teacher. Ever mindful of the need to work for social justice, she believed that individuals must become welliinformed and then act to improve the world. Travels in Latin America and Europe and teaching experiences in Belarus and Beijing enriched her global awareness and strengthened her commitment to our local community. One of the pioneers in online learning at GCC, Professor Watson motivated and helped other faculty to integrate technology into their teaching. The Gretchen S. Watson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who embodies the qualities Professor Watson brought to the classroom: intellectual curiosity, a passion for learning and responsible membership in the world community. Preference is given to a student who is returning to the GCC next semester.

Applicants must submit a supplemental statement in the form of a copy of a “Letter to the Editor” on a topic of your choice that you sent or intend to send to a newspaper.
