Greenfield Community College Offers Clinical Class for Massage Therapist Not Yet Licensed

Solution will put massage school graduates  to work

Greenfield Community College Stillpoint Center for Advanced Education is offering a clinical class beginning in January 2012 tailored to these graduates who are just shy of state licensing requirements.  Students who need more or fewer hours than those offered by the class will be accommodated by the Center as well.  This opportunity is open to any massage school graduate from any school in the Commonwealth who may be in a similar situation—not just GCC graduates.

"Can you help me get licensed?" these kinds of calls from graduates of GCC's massage therapy program, sparked a creative solution from Patricia Wachter, Coordinator of the  Stillpoint Center for Advanced Massage Education to help them get licensed so they  could get back to work. "Graduates who missed the grandfather deadline for licensing, now face meeting the state mandated  650 hour requirement to be licensed. Even though our basic training program provided 700 hours of training, the clinical course as we used to teach it, was anywhere from 25 – 45 hours."

"Our mission at the new Stillpoint Center is to support the ability of all massage graduates to work and continue their skill training.  Community Education at GCC is the perfect vehicle to design clinical course work for a Certificate of Completion acceptable by the State Board."  "We can and will absolutely tailor the class to those needing more or fewer than 55 hours, and we'll review transcripts and the state board requirements, says Wachter.  The outcome here is exciting: putting these graduates into the workforce doing what they educated themselves to do!"
