Procedures

Reporting crimes & emergencies

The Public Safety Office is the central receiving point for all Public Safety-related communications. All police, fire, or medical emergency calls should be directed to Extension 1111 or 413-775-1111 from non-campus phones. All other Public Safety concerns or non-emergency police matters should be reported by calling extension 1212 or 413-775-1212 from non-campus phones. Calls are answered 24 hours a day.

How to respond to an emergency

  • EMERGENCY NUMBER (413) 775-1111 OR EXT. 1111 from an on-campus phone
  • EMERGENCY PHONES are located in the North Wing and East Building hallways.
  • FIRE ALARM PULL STATIONS are located in all campus buildings.
  • BUILDING EVACUATION – go to Parking Lot A or F (Main Campus) or to the public parking lot next to the Wilson’s parking lot (Downtown Center).

When an EMERGENCY occurs on campus, it is important to respond quickly and to follow these procedures.

Medical emergencies

  1. DO NOT MOVE a seriously ill or injured person UNLESS it is a LIFE THREATENING situation.
  2. DO NOT RENDER FIRST AID or CPR unless certified or otherwise qualified to do so.
  3. Find the nearest EMERGENCY PHONE and CALL Public Safety immediately at (413) 775-1111 OR EXT. 1111 from an on-campus phone
  4. Give as much of the following information as possible:
    a. YOUR NAME AND LOCATION
    b. LOCATION OF ILL OR INJURED PERSON
    c. TYPE OF ILLNESS OR INJURY
    d. CONDITION OF ILL OR INJURED PERSON
  5. REMAIN WITH the person until EMERGENCY PERSONNEL arrive and have an opportunity to speak with you.

Violence

  1. DO NOT TRY TO HELP!
  2. STAY CALM. Find the nearest EMERGENCY PHONE at a SAFE location and CALL Public Safety immediately at (413)775-1111 OR EXT. 1111 from an on-campus phone
  3. Give as much of following information as possible:
    a. YOUR NAME AND LOCATION
    b. TYPE OF INCIDENT AND LOCATION
    c. BRIEFLY, PROVIDE DETAILS OF INCIDENT
  4. STAY ON THE LINE with Public Safety until they tell you what to do next.

Fire or explosion

  1. DO NOT attempt to put the fire out.
  2. Activate the nearest FIRE ALARM.
  3. STAY CALM. Find the nearest EMERGENCY PHONE at a SAFE location and CALL Public Safety immediately at (413)775-1111 OR EXT. 1111 from an on-campus phone
  4. Give as much of following information as possible:
    a. YOUR NAME AND LOCATION
    b. TYPE OF INCIDENT AND LOCATION
    c. BRIEFLY PROVIDE DETAILS OF INCIDENT
  5. immediately leave the building by the nearest exit, as shown on posted EVACUATION ROUTE MAPS
  6. Do NOT attempt to recover personal property!
  7. If no one is following, close all doors behind you. Wherever possible, lock doors of offices and other rooms that contain valuables.
  8. Go to Parking Lot A where you will be told what to do next.
  9. Be prepared to provide a statement about the incident to Emergency and College Personnel.
