Sarah E. Jenkins: you burn me

November 12–December 10

Sarah E. Jenkins' exhibit you burn me exists in the tension between. The work explores the queer poetics of connection, rupture, sensuality and desire. Two impossible braids interweave, candles burn in tandem, butterflies quarrel mid-air. The work explores these collisions of passion through drawing, metal-working, animation, video, photography and installation. you burn me is a lover's hand in your hair, a blade's edge, the motion blur of turning back. It is the space between you and me.

Sarah E. Jenkins (b. 1989) is a transdisciplinary artist from central Pennsylvinia, living in Western Mass. She creates experimental stop motion animation, drawings, and objects that explore themes of labor, queerness, wildness and their Appalachian upbringing. Her work is rooted in experimentation and intuitive practices with a trickster nature, often responding to an environment or feeling. Jenkins’ work has been exhibited or screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Torrance Art Museum, Buffalo AKG Museum, Boston Children’s Museum, and the MassArt Ciné Culture series. Her residencies include MacDowell and Marble House Project, among others. Their work is included in two forthcoming books: Reclamation: Queering Appalachia’s Visual Memory (WVU Press) and The Camera is You: Medium, Identity and the Moving Image in Personal Filmmaking (Bloomsbury Publishing). When they aren’t teaching or making art, you may find her pulling tarot or taking meandering walks with her adventure cat, Nessie.
