Did you know… Women`s History Month edition! In the October 1972 issue of "The Forum" (GCC`s student newspaper at the time), Wendy Sibbison is featured on the front page as the leader of a new community service workshop to be offered focusing on women`s liberation. At the time, Wendy worked for the Community Women`s Center in Greenfield.

Coincidentally, Wendy was also honored this month at the GCC Foundation`s Building Bridges & Belonging event. She was awarded the Community Catalyst award for the amazing work she continues to do for our community!

The Reality Fair is a high-energy, interactive financial simulation produced in partnership with @umassfive and MassHire Franklin Hampshire. The event transforms the GCC campus into a "real-world" marketplace, challenging students to navigate the financial complexities of adulthood. Local artist Molly Morin’s show “Made en Mass” will be on display in GCC’s South Gallery from March 4-April 9. Learn more: gccfor.me/molly-morin

Molly is a sculptor, fiber artist and educator based in Western Massachusetts. Her object-making practice considers and critiques technology-enabled systems that amplify and extend power imbalances already present in social, political and art-world contexts. Their work is inspired by their upbringing in rigid and high-achieving communities, shaped by coming of age in the advent of social media and rooted in queer community and labor solidarity. Her work experiments with ways we might make what we need from what we already have.

Last month the crafting club celebrated Black History Month with a painting project inspired by trailblazing African American artist Alma Thomas. Alma was the first graduate of Howard University`s art program, and carved a space for herself in a predominantly white and male-dominated art world in the `60s. She was the first Black woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was a leader in the color field painting style and Incorporated nature and the cosmos into her work.

Participants made miniature Alma- inspired abstract paintings using her signature style.

Craft club meets on Mondays at noon in the Dining Commons – come join us! No experience needed, and all supplies are provided (or bring your own project)!

Athecia Yager says the Education Department’s Career Pathways program has made it financially possible to advance her career and earning potential as an early childhood educator. Did you know… GCC used to be home to numerous varsity and club sports teams, including baseball, softball, karate, cross country, golf, hockey, mens and women`s basketball, women`s volleyball, tennis and, in the late 1970s to early 1980s, TOBOGGAN?

The toboggan team placed well in numerous competitions and won first place in the 4-person and 2-person races at the 1975 national toboggan championships in Lake Placid. In later years, possibly because of the success of GCC`s team, the national competition`s rules were changed so that teams had to use sleds provided by the organizers, rather than their own… and GCC still won.

Describing the competitive toboggan experience, their faculty advisor said, "projected speeds could be 50, 75, 100 miles per hour, we just don`t know." The club raised money by hosting dances and selling cords of wood that they chopped themselves.

In 1980, their coach took the team to Lake Placid to try out luge. GCC`s athletic director at the time explained, "once you start, it is impossible to stop unless you hit enough walls." Apparently GCC students figured out the technique fairly quickly, as an 18-year-old freshman, Beth Seibert, took home a silver medal in luge at the junior olympics, while competing in a motorcycle helmet.
