A wacky and wonderful bit of GCC trivia for your weekend! Did you know that in 1986, someone paid for a star to be named after GCC? The name is "permanently filed" in the International Star Registry`s Swiss vault and copyrighted with the Library of Congress.

What does this mean for the field of astronomy? Not a whole lot, since these names aren`t recognized by the International Astronomical Union, the international non-governmental organization that since 1919 has created the celestial body naming standards used by scientists.

For the non-astronomists among us though, we can feel untroubled about looking up into the night sky and calling the ball of burning gas at Orion RA 5h 8m 41.00s D-06° 5` 0.00" Greenfield Community College.

This is an informal concert with traditional carols and familiar sing-alongs, music by Hassler, Mendelssohn and “Shalom” by Dan Forrest. Conducted by Margery Heins with accompanist John Yannis. Since 1982, GCC’s Department of Adventure Education & Outdoor Leadership has hosted an annual Outdoor Industry Job fair. Join us Thursday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.!

Employers from various regional outdoor companies, agencies, camps, guide services and retailers will be on hand and are looking to fill open part-time, seasonal and full-time positions. The film follows a group of plus-sized women from around the world in their attempt to climb the tallest freestanding mountain on the plant, Mount Kilimanjaro. The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the director, Ida Joglar.

Thanks to our kitchen staff for preparing a delicious meal for close to 400 people! Thanks to Natalie and all of our creative community members for hosting an amazing craft fair! Thanks to our permaculture club for gleaning and giving away many pounds of local vegetables. And thank you to everyone who came and shared a meal in community today. Part of our Missouri Playwrights Series, the play was written exclusively for GCC Theater. The story unfolds in Tarkio, Missouri a couple days before Christmas at Pleasant Pastures, a long-term care facility for the elderly and younger adults who need assisted living.

Join us Thursday, Nov. 13 from 12:15-1:15 p.m. for a presentation with Chris White, Associate Professor of Music Theory and Graduate Program Director, Music at @umass . In this talk, Chris explores key arguments from his new book "The AI Music Problem" examining the technical, social, commercial and expressive challenges that make music an unusually difficult domain for AI. The presentation weaves through the broader music AI ecosystem—from startup culture and the limitations of digitizing scores and audio to the intricacies of composition and music’s deep ties to human emotion and experience. While some aspects of music are markedly susceptible to AI, White ultimately argues that music remains uniquely resistant to the full force of this transformative technology.

Greenfield Community College has been awarded a Food Security Infrastructure Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. The award will help fund construction of a new greenhouse and connected workspace, including a produce washing station and cold storage, to increase production, processing and distribution of nutritious food through the GCC Corner Market Food Pantry and the GCC Dining Commons.
