Today we’re spotlighting current first-generation GCC students and sharing their words of wisdom and encouragement for others!

A first-generation college student is often described as one whose parents or guardians do not have a four-year degree when the student starts college, but a 1st Gen student could be anyone who self-identifies as the first in their immediate family to attend college.

Join us Thursday, Nov. 13 from 12:15-1:15 p.m. for a presentation with Chris White, Associate Professor of Music Theory and Graduate Program Director, Music at @umass . In this talk, Chris explores key arguments from his new book "The AI Music Problem" examining the technical, social, commercial and expressive challenges that make music an unusually difficult domain for AI. The presentation weaves through the broader music AI ecosystem—from startup culture and the limitations of digitizing scores and audio to the intricacies of composition and music’s deep ties to human emotion and experience. While some aspects of music are markedly susceptible to AI, White ultimately argues that music remains uniquely resistant to the full force of this transformative technology.

Sponsored by the GCC Honors Scholar Program, the Social Sciences Department and the Music Department.

In recognition of Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month, join the GCC Office of Institutional Mission, Culture and Climate for a screening of the documentary "Borderland: The Line Within" on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in Stinchfield Auditorium. The screening will be followed by discussion and free lunch for participants. Please RSVP: gccfor.me/borderland-rsvp

"Borderland: The Line Within" reveals how the U.S. immigration enforcement apparatus has evolved into a “border industrial complex,” exploiting vulnerabilities in immigrant communities for profit. The film interweaves first-person narratives of immigrants resisting deportation with data-driven analysis to show the human and systemic costs of migration policy.

We kicked off our campus/community read of "I Never Thought of it That Way" by Mónica Guzmán today. Over the next two months, participants will read the book and discuss with a partner. We had great energy in the room today, and are looking forward to hearing what people take from the book to be better prepared to have "fearlessly curious" conversations.

The artist Jonathan Ryan Storm reimagines the rug as both object and experience: tactile, optical, and spatial. The tufted works in the exhibit, on display in GCC`s South Gallery from Oct. 8-Nov. 6, are not simply surfaces, but environments—fields of rhythm and vibration that invite interaction.

Storm’s practice begins in intuition. He follows rhythm and repetition through the hypnotic motion of tufting, creating compositions that feel discovered rather than designed. Though colorblind, Storm deploys hue and contrast with heightened sensitivity, allowing the body’s perception to take precedence over thought.

Being on the autism spectrum, Storm embraces his “obsession” with rhythm, repetition, and automatic movement as a generative force. What feels compelling and soothing in the act of making is transmitted to the viewer through optical rhythm, tactile texture and vibrating presence. Primateria is not an exhibition of static objects, but a sensory environment—an invitation to feel, to follow and to lose oneself in the oscillating flow.”
