Did you know… GCC used to be home to numerous varsity and club sports teams, including baseball, softball, karate, cross country, golf, hockey, mens and women`s basketball, women`s volleyball, tennis and, in the late 1970s to early 1980s, TOBOGGAN?

The toboggan team placed well in numerous competitions and won first place in the 4-person and 2-person races at the 1975 national toboggan championships in Lake Placid. In later years, possibly because of the success of GCC`s team, the national competition`s rules were changed so that teams had to use sleds provided by the organizers, rather than their own… and GCC still won.

Describing the competitive toboggan experience, their faculty advisor said, "projected speeds could be 50, 75, 100 miles per hour, we just don`t know." The club raised money by hosting dances and selling cords of wood that they chopped themselves.

In 1980, their coach took the team to Lake Placid to try out luge. GCC`s athletic director at the time explained, "once you start, it is impossible to stop unless you hit enough walls." Apparently GCC students figured out the technique fairly quickly, as an 18-year-old freshman, Beth Seibert, took home a silver medal in luge at the junior olympics, while competing in a motorcycle helmet.

As we close out our featured GCC love stories with Katy `10 and Robert `13, we’re reminded that love often finds us when we least expect it. Thank you for joining us in celebrating these adorable couples!

After doing much research, Katy discovered that the @gccadventureeducation program (OLP) is a one-of-a-kind program, unlike any other in the country. So in the fall of 2009, she moved all the way to Greenfield from South Dakota—just to go to GCC! Nearing the end of the school year, at a local young adult group, she met a cute, funny guy named Robert. Shortly after, Katy completed OLP and moved to Michigan for a summer, to California for two years and then back to South Dakota.

Katy and Robert dated long-distance for a bit before Robert followed Katy on her adventures. They became engaged, got married and then in the fall of 2012, they came back to Greenfield. Why? So that Robert could enroll in OLP! They are the only married couple to ever both go through the program. OLP and GCC will forever have a special place in their lives and relationship. Today they live on the north shore of Lake Superior with their two children and dog, enjoying outdoor activities with their family like cross-country skiing, canoeing, hiking and camping.

Our next featured alumni couple are Regina (Jean) and David who met in high school in New Jersey in 1970. They moved to Massachusetts in 1977 and were married in Warwick State Park. They attended GCC together and graduated in 1984.

Jean has been a nurse for the past 42 years, starting as a pediatric nurse and then worked in college health at Wellesley College. She is now happily working one day a week at an independent senior care facility as a bridge to retirement. David recently “retired” after a 35+ year career as an architect and continues to work very part time on freelance projects.

They are the proud parents of two adult children and still live in the 1922 colonial they bought as their first house. They’re approaching 47 years as a married couple!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and we’re excited to feature some alumni couples who met or had their relationship strengthened here at GCC.

Getting lost on campus can lead to love! Julianne `92 and Megan `92 met wandering GCC’s hallways, trying to find the Art Department. Walking to class together and trying to orient themselves, they discovered they were in almost all the same classes!

They both graduated in 1992 and then moved away to complete their education. But GCC and Greenfield are places they’ve always held dear to their hearts, and so they returned to Greenfield in 2000, where they currently and happily reside.
