It`s National Nurses Week! Did you know… GCC`s nursing students have worn a number of uniforms over the years, first white or green and white pin-striped dresses or pants suits, then a variety of styles of scrubs? Until 1981, this uniform, at least for female nursing students, included a small white starched cap (as pictured in this graduation photo from the late 1970`s or early 1980`s).

By May 1980, though, the ADN class of 1981 was over the cap. On May 1, 1980, 43 members of the class of `81 signed a statement (also pictured) informing the college that as of September, they would no longer wear it. They wrote, "We recognize that in the past the nurse`s cap has been a symbol of pride in their profession… However, at this time we recognize that the positive meanings of this symbol have become in many ways overshadowed by its association with the image of the nurse as passive, as dependent, as subservient, as necessarily female and as limited to traditionally defined roles."

"I took Prof. David Lanoie`s Intro to Justice Studies class on a whim because I needed an elective and it fit into my schedule, and it was the best class I`ve ever taken. Prof. Lanoie is funny and thoughtful and kind and wildly smart in a way that welcomes rather than intimidates. He genuinely wanted to know what I and my classmates thought about what we were learning, even if he disagreed with our positions. He wanted to learn from us as much as he wanted us to learn from him. The class was collaborative in our academic learning, as well as in its flexibility to account for everyone`s real life needs and time demands outside of the classroom. I felt so incredibly respected in that class as both a learner and a person. I came into that class after a tough previous semester, and it reminded me why I enjoy learning. It`s also one of the only classes I`ve ever taken that left me feeling driven to continue to engage and learn more beyond the end of the class, rather than just feeling burnt out at the end. It`s a class that`s going to stick with me forever, and I tell everyone to take one of Prof. Lanoie`s classes if they can." —current GCC student

Andrew Lee has served as an instructional and inclusion leader and history teacher in several schools in the Boston and Philadelphia areas. He has presented about Asian American identity at numerous workshops, including at the National Association for Multicultural Education, and is the Board Secretary for FAN Chinatown, a nonprofit dedicated to the uplift of Boston’s Chinatown.

Elysium O’Malley came to Greenfield Community College to get a head start on higher education and to challenge himself beyond the traditional high school environment. GCC’s English Department will host visiting novelist Ryan Habermeyer on Thursday, Apr. 23 from 9:30-11 a.m. for a public reading and Q&A. This event is free and open to the public—we hope you`ll join us!

Habermeyer is the author of the novel "Necronauts" and the short story collections "Salt Folk" and "The Science of Lost Futures." His award-winning work has appeared in publications such as "Conjunctions," "Alaska Quarterly Review" and "The Massachusetts Review." A Fulbright Scholar with international teaching and research experience in Poland, Scotland, Spain and Mexico, he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Salisbury University.

A large rainbow could be seen over campus yesterday evening for ArtsNight, which we felt was especially poignant as this year`s event was dedicated to artist and professor Paul Lindale (1965-2026). Thank you to everyone who joined us – it was truly an amazing night! And congratulations to our students in the theater, music and art departments for their stellar performances!
