When life throws significant challenges at us, a decision to return to college can seem daunting. But as Chey Charvis sees it, doing so can also reinforce a sense of confidence and determination.

After losing her sister to cancer recently, her plan to attend GCC required extra courage and commitment. Chey did take that leap and credits the supportive community at GCC for helping to balance it all.

She says GCC’s counseling services have been particularly meaningful, and she describes the Women’s Resource Center as a valuable source of support. Academically, Chey speaks highly of her biology class with Jen Williams, noting how helpful and engaging the course has been. “Jen has been amazing in helping me understand the material,” Chey says. “I really love our labs so far.”

One of the things Chey appreciates most about GCC is the overall atmosphere. “I love the community feeling,” she says. “Some community colleges can feel almost as busy as a university. Everyone here seems intentional about their work and words and is, overall, kind.”

Chey says she has always been interested in the field of oncology, and her sister’s passing made her career path even clearer. With her first semester now under her belt and a strong sense of momentum, Chey says she intends to enroll in the Practical Nursing program and then ultimately work her way to completing the Registered Nursing program at GCC. She explains, "I have done 'non-traditional' patient care in the past, both personally and through employment. Recently, I took a position at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in order to get more 'traditional' experience in the medical field. I am looking forward to developing my skills both in the classroom and in the field."

For prospective students considering GCC, Chey’s advice is simple and encouraging: “Be like Nike and just do it! You will feel welcome and supported both academically and personally.”
