Adam Holmes: The Life & Legacy of W. E. B. Du Bois

Adam Holmes, Assistant Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Center at UMass–Amherst, presents an overview of the life, work and legacy of W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the most important thinkers in American—indeed global—history. This talk will examine his work as a scholar, activist, theorist, public intellectual, and historian while also drawing on the vast resources of the Du Bois archive to reveal aspects of his personal life and character. Du Bois’ achievements will be discussed within the larger black intellectual movement in the post-Reconstruction Era. Holmes is responsible for programming, outreach and events at the Du Bois Center since 2018. He previously worked at the National Literacy Trust, a charity seeking to improve literacy rates in underserved communities across the UK, and has a B.A. in history and a master’s in American Studies from King’s College London.
