The Sociology of Disability, Knowledge and Expertise

Join us for a presentation and discussion with Helene Grogan, sociology Ph.D. student at UMass–Amherst, NSF Graduate Research Fellow and proud former social sciences student at GCC. In her research, Helene uses qualitative and computational methods to research subjects related to disability in society, the construction of knowledge, expertise and ignorance and approaches to both disability and climate justice in law and policy. Helene will describe how a late diagnosis of autism in her early 40s, combined with her previous education in physics, sparked her curiosity, brought her back to school and set her on a path to social science research. Sponsored by the GCC Honors Scholar Program, the Nahman-Watson Library, and the Social Sciences Department. Snacks and coffee for attendees!
