Greenfield Community College (GCC) has a rich history of geological education, cultivated over decades by dedicated faculty members. A cornerstone of this legacy is the GCC Geology Collection, a valuable educational resource for students and visitors alike. The collection is intended to serve as an effective educational tool for our students and to stimulate the curiosity of visitors. From 2022 to 2025, a comprehensive restoration and digital cataloging project was undertaken by our Environmental Science professor, Beth Moonstone, and a committed group of GCC interns. The collection is named for Professor Emeritus Richard D Little. As an educator and armored mud ball enthusiast he taught geology at GCC full time for 34 years before semi-retiring in 2004. He has published articles, written books and produced videos in the geoscience field, has taught many additional courses, workshops and presentations at other institutions, and runs his own geology tour business. He is past President of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, past Chairman of the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District, and Vice President and past president of the Pioneer Valley Institute. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Science Educator Hall of Fame in May of 2004. Since his arrival at the college in 1969, Dr. Little has made significant contributions to our geoscience department. He has notably expanded the geology collection, enriching it with distinctive local specimens from Franklin County.
