This specimen preserves soft‑sediment slump folding within fine‑grained shale. The contorted, downslope‑sheared layers formed when water‑saturated mud became unstable and began to slide or sag before full lithification. As the sediment mass deformed under its own weight, the originally horizontal laminae were bent, folded, and draped into irregular structures that record localized disturbance on an ancient slope or delta front.
