UMass Fine Arts Center welcomes GCC students

September 12, 2008

A new arrangement between the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and Greenfield Community College will enable GCC students to purchase tickets for all UMass Fine Arts Center events for only $15 with a valid student ID.

"We're delighted we can offer such a substantial discount to GCC students," said Shawn Farley, Director of Marketing at the Fine Arts Center.   "With the potential of a performing arts center at Greenfield Community College," Farley added, "it's a great way to start grooming arts patrons from and for its school.  That's why the partnership between our two schools is so mutually beneficial.  We can reciprocate GCC's support  of our program when its arts center becomes a reality."

Leo Hwang-Carlos, Associate Dean of Humanities at Franklin County's only college, agreed.  "The whole community is the beneficiary of the collaboration," Hwang-Carlos said.  "This is a striking opportunity to build a cultural audience right here in Franklin County, which in turn, will augment our aspirations for our own performing arts center at GCC."

In addition, Hwang-Carlos cited the UMass Fine Arts Center's reputation for excellence.  "Now our students will have the chance to see a rich, diverse range of productions that excite the imagination.  The Fine Arts Center has a long tradition of presenting world-class performers, musicians, and artists."

Located at 151 Presidents Drive on the UMass campus, the Fine Arts Center is indeed a cultural mecca in the Pioneer Valley.  The center not only offers a series of nationally renowned performing artists, but also innovative educational programs along with acclaimed galleries.

According to Farley, by buying a $15 ticket, GCC students will be able to obtain seating anywhere in either of the two concert halls at Fine Arts performances.  The main hall has close to 2,000 seats.

"GCC students will be able to view major operas, dance companies, orchestras, and the finest musical artists at a reduced price," Farley said.  "GCC's President, Robert Pura, has done a remarkable job in engaging his school's student body in the arts, and we're glad its students can now benefit from the same discount traditionally extended to the Five Colleges.  We're also encouraging the staff and faculty at Greenfield Community College to join us."
