Initially, Leilani Aires planned on taking a gap year before diving into a four-year university. However, the chance to earn an associate degree free of cost at Greenfield Community College was an opportunity she couldn't ignore.

"It just felt like such a valuable educational experience I couldn't pass up," Leilani said. Beyond the financial benefits, she was drawn to the college's reputation for community involvement, leadership and volunteering.

Leilani is currently enrolled in the liberal arts program, but her academic goals don't stop there. She is also interested in international relations, legal studies and communications. The supportive environment at GCC has allowed her diverse interests to bloom. “I’ve been able to think critically about and take an action-oriented approach to topics relevant to the GCC community and others around the world,” she explained. “The variety of courses I took made it possible for me to gain clarity about what I’m truly passionate about.”

Navigating a change in career goals can be daunting, but Leilani credits her advisor, Lani Robadue, for keeping her grounded. "I've changed my mind about what I want to study and major in about ten times since I arrived," Leilani said. "Every time, Lani has supported me unconditionally. She reminds me that my journey isn't linear, which helps me remain resilient and open-minded about all the potential my future holds."

Leilani doesn't just attend classes; she shapes the campus culture. As the student senate president, she chairs meetings and collaborates on initiatives that directly impact the student body. She is also an active member of the Student Activities Council, where she enjoys the creative process of bringing community events to life.

These roles have provided her with more than just a resume boost; they’ve given her a front-row seat to the inner workings of school policy and the diverse needs of her peers.

When asked what she would say to someone considering enrolling at GCC, Leilani emphasized the importance of intuition. "This is your education that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. You never know where your educational path will lead you, so you might as well have fun with it. GCC is a place where dreams come true. I truly believe anyone could find their place within this community and thrive."

As Leilani continues her academic journey, she stands as a testament to the fact that with the right support and a bit of courage, the journey is rewarding.
