From Classroom to Career: My Transformative Accounting Internship Experience

By Mary Brouder

As a GCC student pursuing an accounting career, I recently had the extremely valuable experience of interning at Sisson Accounting Services PC in Turners Falls, MA. This 12-week internship as an Accounting & Tax Intern has solidified my passion for the field and provided invaluable real-world experience.

In just three months, I learned so much! I am now more proficient in Excel, and was introduce  to a number of programs, such as QuickBooks, Ten Key ATB, and Intuit Lacerte Tax Software. I have a better understanding of the importance of client confidentiality, and have gained greater confidence in interacting with clients.

I started this internship with only one accounting course under my belt, so initially everything seemed new to me. However, as I wrap up my second course in accounting and a semester of interning at the Sisson accounting office, I am much more confident in my skills.

During my internship, I was able to put into actual practice the financial concepts that Professor Galbraith emphasized during class. In my GCC accounting class, I learned about depreciation, amortization, payroll taxes, etc., all of which came into play at my internship.

What surprised me most was how supportive, kind, and patient Kathy Sisson was at the accounting office. She was so welcoming, and I learned so much from her. She was an excellent role model and altogether the internship was a wonderful experience.

This internship has most certainly influenced my career goals. My desire to pursue a career in the field of accounting has been solidified, and it has even made me lean towards specializing in tax preparation. After completing this internship, I am confident that I can do this work, I enjoy this work, and I can see myself doing this as my career in the long-term.

I now plan to pursue a master’s degree in accounting at UMASS Amherst. Not only will the internship strengthen my application to UMASS, but it will also bolster my resume for future employment opportunities.

Special thanks to Professor Jeffrey Galbraith and Internship Coordinator David Brown for helping me on my way to becoming a Certified Public Accountant!
