GCC recently participated in an event hosted by the MassHire Franklin Hampshire Workforce Board as part of an ongoing “MassHire 250 Workforce Innovation Tour,” a state initiative that celebrates organizations and businesses helping expand workforce innovation throughout the Commonwealth.

The event took place on Lake Warner in North Hadley and included local recreational businesses, organizations, and chambers of commerce. Massachusetts Secretary of the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development Lauren Jones (pictured in the red MA 250 sweatshirt in the front row) enjoyed a paddle coordinated by Adventure East, many of whose employees are graduates of GCC’s Adventure Education degree program.

GCC’s Dean of Workforce Development Alex Carley noted, “The outdoor recreation industry in our region serves as a strong example of a high functioning workforce ecosystem in action: employers, training providers, policymakers, and our Workforce Board and Career Center partners have all come together to collaborate, innovate, and invest in the future growth of this vital industry sector in the Pioneer Valley.”

GCC plays an important role in supporting the rapidly growing outdoor recreation industry, which is projected to be an increasing driver of economic development in the region and beyond. GCC effectively prepares career-ready graduates for this industry every year through short-term, industry-recognized certifications and a two-year degree program. The Workforce Development team has also partnered with employers to provide upskilling and professional development training programs to their incumbent staff funded by state Massachusetts workforce training funds.

As part of its role in fostering collaboration among industry stakeholders, GCC has hosted the region’s annual Outdoor Recreation Industry Summit twice, with the third annual Summit scheduled for October 30. Through its leadership and partnerships, Greenfield Community College remains at the forefront of building a resilient outdoor industry—training professionals, supporting local businesses, and strengthening community ties for a prosperous future.
