Student Financial Services is available to assist students and families with applying for financial aid. Use the step-by-step guide below to manage the information needed to navigate the FAFSA application. If you are already familiar with filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can go directly to the FAFSA web site. Step 1. Your StudentAid.gov Account Your identity is verified through your StudentAid.gov account (sometimes called an FSA ID). It is applied for once, and used as necessary, for any transactions with Federal Student Aid. If this is your first time filing or signing a FAFSA, you must create an account online. All students filing a FAFSA must apply for a StudentAid.gov account. Parents of dependent students must use their own account to provide federal tax data on the application and for an electronic signature. Be sure to answer the basic questions about yourself correctly. Use an email address that you will always have access to; do not use your GCC student email address. Complete the security questions and account verification steps. Get Your StudentAid.gov Account Having an account also allows you to: View the status and results of a processed FAFSA application. Make corrections to your FAFSA. Access all your Federal Student Aid information including aggregate usage of federal grant and loans. Make address corrections to a Direct Loan account, calculate a repayment schedule, and get interactive counseling on Direct Loans. Retrieve contact information for loan servicers, as well as details for Direct Loans from any college or university. Complete loan entrance & exit counseling. Sign your Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN). Request a duplicate copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR). Step 2. File the FAFSA The FAFSA is administered by Federal Student Aid, a division of the Department of Education. Depending on whether or not you are a dependent or independent student, you may have to provide financial information for your spouse or your parents. Complete a FAFSA Once the Department of Education processes your application you will receive an email with information regarding your FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS). You can then log back onto StudentAid.gov to review your FSS, make sure it’s correct and complete and/or make corrections to your FAFSA. Important FAFSA Info GCC's school code is 00216900 An annual FAFSA is required in order to be considered for all types of financial aid including grants, scholarships, loans and institutional funds. The information collected on the FAFSA is based on federal income tax filings for students and their parents It can take up to approximately 5 business days for the FAFSA to be processed and sent to GCC. Expect a timeline of up to 5 weeks from the date a FAFSA filed before an aid package is offered at GCC. Federal financial aid is only awarded to students already admitted and matriculated into an approved GCC degree or certificate program. It is important to respond in a timely manner to any financial aid outstanding requirements listed in MyGCC portal; aid cannot be awarded until a student file is complete. Step 3.
