Fade Like a Sigh: Zora Murff & Rana Young
October 7 – November 7

Together, Zora Murff and Rana Young began mining their own family histories, exploring the void left by an absent parent. The images in Fade Like a Sigh reflect their dialogues of this shared experience. Using their personal small collections of family photographs and reinterpreting them through their own contemporary imagery, Murff and Young highlight the complicated relationship between photographic record and the fragmented and abstract nature of memory.

Fade Like a Sigh: Zora Murff & Rana Young
October 7 – November 7

Pay no attention to the elements behind the screen! Students in both sections of Computer Arts Foundation created digital collages exploring the hidden materials and processes that make the technology we use in the classroom possible—from lithium mines to server farm racks. These collages were then collaboratively laid out and assembled into a risograph printed zine! Threaded through the neons and patterns, you can see phrases that students felt captured the ethos of the project.
Come by and visit this project hanging on the wall outside of the computer arts studio!

Last week GCC Art Professors Joan O’Beirne and Jen Simms, GCC Advisor and Success Coach, Sarah Schmidt and GCC Transfer Coordinator. Shane Clark traveled to MassArt for an amazing tour and conversation about our updated articulation agreement in the areas of Painting, SIM and Photography. Thank you to Shannon Gallagher who met us there and led the way! For more info about this collaboration with MassArt in Boston (the only state-funded art school in the country – lucky Massachusetts residents!), please be in touch. It’s an extravagant school with so much opportunity, and a great transfer option for GCC Art Students.

The Art Department welcomes our new full-time colleague, KELLY CLARE!

Kelly Clare (they/she) is an artist and poet based in Western Massachusetts. Their artwork, scholarship, and poetics often question the boundaries between digital technology and materiality, and the environmental consequences of hidden infrastructure. Kelly received her MFA from the Sculpture & Intermedia program at the University of Iowa and she has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Author of the chapbook NEARLY EARLY ARTLY NEVER (greying ghost 2024), their literary work appears in FENCE, The Digital Review, Prelude, and Ugly Duckling’s Second Factory. She is an editor at Ghost Proposal, a press focusing on work that exists beyond genre.

The Art Department couldn’t be better situated, on the South side next to the absolutely gorgeous permaculture gardens. This blanket of native wildflowers in full bloom is teeming with life right now. Be sure to park in the E lot, walk slowly and look to your left to enjoy this beauty and goodness.
