POC Club GCC event

POC Club

Wednesday March 4 - 12:00pm

The People of Color (POC) Club aims to build authentic and long-lasting solidarity among people of color in order to undo invisibility and anti-Blackness, dismantle white supremacy and advance racial justice. Open to all students.

The Struggle is Eternal: Learning from the Movement GCC event

The Struggle is Eternal: Learning from the Movement

Wednesday March 4 - 3:30pm

Join this interactive online discussion featuring historian and author Dr. Joseph Fitzgerald, and moderated by Dr. Angela Campbell, Vice President of IMCC. The program explores the lives and legacies of Black women organizers Gloria Richardson and Barbara Smith, centering Black women’s leadership, student activism and coalition-building across social justice movements. Drawing connections between the Cambridge Movement in Cambridge, Maryland, and student activism in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the discussion examines how past struggles for civil rights, women’s civil liberties, and community accountability continue to shape contemporary movements for justice and freedom. By linking historical and present-day activism, the program invites the community to reflect on its own traditions of social justice engagement and to consider the ongoing responsibilities of allyship, accountability and collective action in dismantling systemic oppression. Free and open to the public. RSVP for the Zoom link.

International Women’s Day Celebration GCC event

International Women’s Day Celebration

Saturday March 7 - 1:00pm

Core Lobby

Join us for our International Women's Day program "Standing on the Shoulders for International Women's Day" to hear the stories of the women who came before us and who continue to inspire courage. Reverand Sarah Pirtle, Carol Sartz and Swansea Benham Bleicher lead us through story, song and conversation to kindle a flame of hope—one that grows from our common bonds and honors our vital diversity. This event includes a small group activity: think about a woman—from the past or present, from history or from your family—who inspires you and bring something to represent her. Free and open to the public, ages seven and up. RSVP recommended, but not required.

Greenfield Community College sits today on the homelands of the Pocumtuck, Norwottock, Woronoco, Agawam, Nipmuck and Abenaki. Native peoples still live here. This land was the site of warfare during the Battle of Great Rivers Falls, and the outcome of that war forever changed the people, land and waterways that some call the Connecticut River Valley. Respecting and acknowledging indigenous connections to this land is a first step in a long process of self-education. As new findings reshape our understanding, we commit to the work of decolonizing our thinking regarding our region’s history. We also give gratitude for nearby waters and lands, on which we depend to sustain life and wellbeing. We are all interconnected.

Land acknowledgment endorsed by the DEISC 9/13/24; endorsed by College Council 9/20/24; endorsed by President's Staff 10/2/24; endorsed by GCCPA 10/7/24
