Currently showing in the South Gallery – Hard Times are Fighting Times by Alice Proujansky. Show runs until 11/5. Alice will be doing a gallery talk Monday 10/26 at noon. Mark your calendars.
This exhibit describes the legacy of the Proujansky’s parents’ participation in radical leftist groups that sought to overthrow imperialism and capitalism through organizing and revolution. Her photographs of their propaganda archive, surveillance records, family snapshots and current lives share this history from an intimate distance.

Students in Visual Concepts II created a site-specific installation the size of a room the second week of classes! After taking the piece down and engaging in generative documentation, they used hundreds of photos to make collages to reflect on the experience. Together, they considered new spatial and material shifts and alternative documentation practices. Here are some great moments from the results!

The GCC Art Faculty Exhibit has opened in the South Gallery! We will be introducing ourselves and talking about the work on September 23rd at Noon. All are invited to join us. For the past four weeks, 11 students from ART 247 (Painting: On Location and in the Studio) explored painting from outdoor locations and in the studio here at GCC. The class went to four locations, Shelburne Falls, Leverett, Greenfield and downtown Northampton, where we made studies, drawings and notations about the space and environment observed. These studies were then used as a reference to develop larger oil paintings in the studio. Without photographic references, we relied on our sketches, notations and visual memory to construct the images shown here.

Hope everyone is having a good summer. At GCC we are still painting away. These paintings are from ART 247 On Location and in the Studio. We make sketches at various places in the area and bring them back to the studio to use as references for paintings. This allows for more invention and utilizes memory.

This course is usually offered every other summer but we are having so much fun we might just do it again next summer.
