Self-portrait experiments from Drawing Foundation. To alleviate some of the anxiety associated with self-portrait work, the class engaged in quick experimental exercises including blind contour, tracing while your face is smooshed up against the paper, two-handed drawing, `feeling` only with eyes closed – all encouraging new mark-making and gestural methods to be included in their longer, observational drawings. The class also experimented with self-portraits through monoprinting. Here`s some of the work from this past week. Selected studies from the summer Visual Concepts 1 class, experimenting with homemade botanical inks, invented tools and India ink to explore patterns and value through mark making methods and layering. On Monday, the summer Visual Concepts I class discussed a simple method in making homemade botanical inks from local plants. They were also encouraged to make their own mark-making tool/brush from found materials. Today they arrived with the most beautiful array of local colors, along with great stories related to how they got made. Some of the plants were harvested from the GCC permaculture gardens. @gccpermaculture The students passed them around to each other and made swatch sheets, including a comparison to store-bought India ink. They ended up sharing all their inks while exploring mark-making methods with a focus on developing patterns with attention to their value ranges. I`ll share more next week! Great start for Visual Concepts I summer class! They are using simple printmaking techniques with stencils and textures to explore design concepts, mainly composition and value.
