This exhibit opened today! The artist Jonathan Ryan Storm reimagines the rug as both object and experience: tactile, optical, and spatial. The tufted works in the exhibit are not simply surfaces, but environments—fields of rhythm and vibration that invite interaction.
Storm’s practice begins in intuition. He follows rhythm and repetition through the hypnotic motion of tufting, creating compositions that feel discovered rather than designed. Though colorblind, Storm deploys hue and contrast with heightened sensitivity, allowing the body’s perception to take precedence over thought.
Being on the autism spectrum, Storm embraces his “obsession” with rhythm, repetition, and automatic movement as a generative force. What feels compelling and soothing in the act of making is transmitted to the viewer through optical rhythm, tactile texture, and vibrating presence. Primateria is not an exhibition of static objects, but a sensory environment—an invitation to feel, to follow, and to lose oneself in the oscillating flow.”
Jonathan Ryan Storm (b.1980 Arizona) lives in Western Massachusetts and works in Southern Vermont. @jonathanryanstorm @gccgreenfield #gccartdepartment #southgallery

Students in Computer Arts I just had their first critique!

Responding to speculative utopian and dystopian futures, they used technology as a tool, theme, and physical medium in order to imagine alternate futures. From fishbowls to collaged screens to blinking machines, the computer and its networks become objects.

Students in Visual Concepts with Johanna Hoogendyk have been making their own botanical inks and tools to explore mark making techniques and patterns. This emphasizes the artist’s relationship to our tools, materials, processes and responsibility to sustainable practices while making art. @gccartdepartment @gccgreenfield #gccartdepartment @gccpermaculture

Self-portrait experiments from Drawing Foundation. To alleviate some of the anxiety associated with self-portrait work, the class engaged in quick experimental exercises including blind contour, tracing while your face is smooshed up against the paper, two-handed drawing, `feeling` only with eyes closed – all encouraging new mark-making and gestural methods to be included in their longer, observational drawings. The class also experimented with self-portraits through monoprinting. Here`s some of the work from this past week.
