On Monday, the summer Visual Concepts I class discussed a simple method in making homemade botanical inks from local plants. They were also encouraged to make their own mark-making tool/brush from found materials. Today they arrived with the most beautiful array of local colors, along with great stories related to how they got made. Some of the plants were harvested from the GCC permaculture gardens. @gccpermaculture The students passed them around to each other and made swatch sheets, including a comparison to store-bought India ink. They ended up sharing all their inks while exploring mark-making methods with a focus on developing patterns with attention to their value ranges. I`ll share more next week! Great start for Visual Concepts I summer class! They are using simple printmaking techniques with stencils and textures to explore design concepts, mainly composition and value. Go check out Professor Joan O’Beirne’s show at the Vermont Center of Photography! Using delicate gel lifts, O’Beirne transforms self-portraits into transparent fragments, folded and torn like the stories we tell ourselves. Reception is this Friday, 7/11, from 5-8pm, and the show’s up through the end of August!

This is work by Tovey Baker @_charles_bazooka from ART 247 On Location and in the Studio. New to oils at the start of this course, Tovey hit the ground running! Tovey will continue with the AVA program this fall and hopefully another painting course in the future!!!!

Molly Sharry @peachespeachespeachespeaachhes was new to oils before taking this summer course On Location and in the Studio ART 247. They made these beauties and their sketches were also something wonderful- which I did not photograph, unfortunately. Nice job Molly❤️

These paintings – from ART 247 On Location and in the Studio – by Caroline James @sugarloafvalleygirl are just a handful of the heaps of good ones she made during this course. Caroline heads to Mount Holyoke this fall on the Frances Perkins Scholarship. Congratulations Caroline! We will miss you!
